SAE MINI BAJA PROJECT Suspension design Ryan Schech Advisor: Dr. Ho-Hoon Lee Instructor: Dr. Koutsougeras

SAE MINI BAJA COMPETITION Baja SAE® consists of competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain.

Suspension design

Deliverables Understand the engineering concepts in designing the suspension system on a mini Baja. – Theoretical Part Research – Mini Baja Suspension designs – The design selected and specified by Brock Kerry Exam the methodology and processes used Understand how the variables were obtained Variables used to determine design – Physics involved in designing Natural Frequency Newton’s Second Law Simple Harmonic Motions Damping Perform the calculations for an ideal situation to show understanding of theory – Application Part Apply the theories/results to construct the suspension system Find what suspension systems are commercially available Obtain the materials according to the data collected Make the necessary adjustments to the design specifications for one that is commercially available. Construct a prototype to prove results Perform a cost analysis for the suspension

Timeline Project selection and approval 3/14 Provide a Research report 4/14 Perform the ideal calculations 4/14 Comparing results to what is commercially available 5/14 Select/obtain an appropriate suspension system 6/14-7/14 Perform the adjustments to the design specifications to suit the available system 8/14 Apply the results by constructing a prototype 8/14 Finish prototype 10/14 Perform cost analysis 11/14
