What is Civil Air Patrol? Federally chartered Nonprofit, Humanitarian Organization Serves as the Civilian Auxiliary to the United States Air Force Serving America for over 65 years Civil Air Patrol is a federally chartered, not for profit, humanitarian organization. We were established on Dec 1 1941 and became the official civilian auxiliary to the US Air Force in 1948. We are an organization with approximately 61,000 total volunteer members, with more than 26,000 in our youth development program. All members of CAP are volunteers and donate their time and resources. We have a close relationship with the Air Force, wear an AF style uniform and abide by many of the same customs, courtesies and regulations. However, we are still civilians and are not considered members of the military. For over 65 years, CAP’s mission is to serve our country by performing homeland security, humanitarian and disaster relief, developing America’s youth and educating our citizens on the importance of air and space power.

CAP Missions Emergency Services Search and Rescue Disaster Relief Homeland Security Counterdrug Humanitarian Services Air Force ROTC Flights So, what does CAP do? We have three core missions: Emergency Services, Cadet Programs and Aerospace Education Best known for our work in search and rescue and disaster relief missions, CAP is expanding its role in the 21st century to include an increasing number of homeland security operations and exercises. CAP also performs counterdrug reconnaissance missions at the request of law enforcement agencies and can do radiological monitoring and damage assessment. CAP members undergo rigorous training to perform these missions safely and cost-effectively.

CAP Missions Emergency Services CAP regularly provides aerial photography and disaster relief for tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, wildfires and other natural disasters. During the last major hurricane, Hurricane Ike, CAP members volunteered to provide aerial assessment photography for state and federal emergency managers. Other CAP volunteers helped distribute ice, water and other basics to victims of the hurricane. Some of the volunteers were local and others came from out-of-state – they all took time away from their jobs and families to come help the hurricane victims.

CAP Missions Cadet Programs Leadership Skills Aerospace Education Physical Fitness Character Development Activities Through their experiences as CAP cadets, young people develop into responsible citizens and become tomorrow's aerospace leaders. CAP introduces CAP Cadets to Air Force perspectives on leadership through classroom instruction, mentoring and hands-on learning. The fundamentals of aerospace science are learned in the classroom and through first-hand experience. CAP offers weekend and summer activities that allow cadets to fly, learn to lead, explore aerospace careers, assist in CAP’s emergency services missions and make friends. The leadership skills, self-confidence, and discipline cadets gain through CAP prepares them to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves in life. CAP Missions Cadet Programs Major Kim Campbell, USAF Former CAP cadet Former USAF Academy cadet wing commander Safely lands heavily damaged A-10 after sustaining hostile fire over Iraq We have quite a few success stories from former CAP Cadets. Major Samantha Weeks was on the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, “Thunderbirds,” and flew the No. 5 jet as the lead solo pilot. Major Kim Campbell was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross w/Valor for landing her A-10 after it received heavy damage in combat in Iraq. CAP Cadet Alumni include a former Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, several NASA astronauts, the first female Thunderbird pilot and scores of military and commercial pilots. Approximately 10% of each freshman class at the US Air Force Academy is comprised of current and former CAP cadets. If your son or daughter is interested in a career in the military or the aviation industry, CAP is a great way for them to “test-fly” a potential career. CAP Missions Aerospace Education CAP Members Aerospace Education Members General Public There are essentially three audiences for our Aerospace Education mission. CAP members use AE materials and curriculum to teach cadets about aerospace science. We also have Aerospace Education memberships available for educators. Teachers who join as Aerospace Education members have access to AE curriculum and are free to use it in their classrooms. We have approximately 1,600 AEMs and reach nearly 45,000 youth each year.

Where is CAP? = One Unit CAP Units Civil Air Patrol has over 1,200 units across the country. We even have a few in Germany and Japan, mainly as a service to the children of military personnel stationed overseas. How you can help Join as a volunteer member Become a patron member Donate or become a sponsor There are several ways you can help support the work of Civil Air Patrol. You can join as a volunteer member in our squadron. We accept people from 18 years and up into our adult program and kids can join if they are between the ages of 12 and 18. We meet <INSERT MEETING TIMES, DAYS, & LOCATION> If you don’t have the time to volunteer – you can still help out CAP by becoming a National Patron Member. You can join online anytime at www.gocivilairpatrol.com. As a patron member, your annual membership dues of $35 will help CAP and you will receive our bimonthly Volunteer magazine. The dues go to national programs that may not have funding – like special activities for cadets or aerospace education workshops. TO THE PRESENTOR: this is your chance to tell the folks what you need. Are you raising money for a cadet encampment? Do you need funds for a building or supplies? Maybe you have a couple of people who need assistance to attend a special activity or training…make sure you give a few specific examples. Below is just some example text: As a nonprofit, we appreciate any assistance through donations and sponsorships. Your help assists us in providing services and programs in our area. We are currently raising funds to hold our annual summer cadet encampment. This is a chance for the youth in our state to develop teamwork and leadership skills through a weeklong series of military activities. The encampment is one of the highlights of our cadet program and most of the youth want to participate. You or your company/organization can help by sponsoring a cadet’s registration or providing a general donation to help offset the costs of holding this event.
