The Global Atlas for Renewable Energy The case for wind power on islands Henning Wuester, Director – Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre

2 “ The entry ticket to deploy renewable energy technologies is out of reach for most developing countries. Governments cannot afford multi-million measurement campaigns, and the international community is not in the position to cater for all requests. Publicly accessible information, embedded expertise, free software and tools can help countries seek for solutions, and find answers. The Global Atlas is a large concentration of scattered public knowledge to provide an essential service: a means to accelerate the global energy transition ” Vision statement

Solar, wind, bioenergy and geothermal datasets Uniform coverage with a detail level of 3 km for solar and 5 km for wind 1 interface to access and use 1,100 datasets on 11 Geo-servers for free 2-days training module for 35 policy makers in 25 countries 6 online analysis tools 67 countries, of which 47 contributed to the project 90, 000 unique users since Jan ,000 registered users created 1,400 maps stored in the system 150 daily visitors with peaks of 1,000+ visitors International press coverage with regular news releases 3 Current status

Products Spatial planning module Large network of resource mapping experts Vast dissemination channels 4 Renewable energy prospectors Geographic Information platform Mobile App Education & targeted assistance

Value proposition for wind 5 Raise profile of wind energy Highlight opportunities Propose a platform to initiate dialog Handover to private sector How? Compile the most accurate wind modelling information for each island Compile infrastructures (roads, grids) and protected areas Population density (km) Topography Existing measurement points (beta) Example on Sri Lanka. Wind map at 80m, grids, protected areas. Average time to develop and save such map: 30 mns.

Why was not it done before? 6
