Future Road Map – Modern Control, Command Signalling Systems BY Anshul Gupta DRM, Adra, South Eastern Railway Secretary, Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (London) – Indian Section

CONTROL - Enhancing safety levels by adopting and introducing train protection and warning system or automatic train control system. CONTROL - Providing integrated Rail Road safety system of eliminating accident cases involving road vehicles dashing with level crossing gates as well as moving trains. Introduce driver advisory COMMAND - Adoption of Railway Train Traffic Management system for commanding the operations of coaching and freight trains, improve through put as well as to provide real time train info COMMAND - To optimize terminal detentions and monitoring/commanding loading/unloading of important commodities

What is CCS Modern Control, Command Signalling is for improving performance in terms of health and safety, reliability and punctuality Increasing capacity and availability - Reducing cost Integrating all of these to compete effectively with other transport modes Delivering a sustainable future for the railway

Control, Command Signalling System - Future of Railways in 2025 to 35 Significantly Lower Costs Very high reliability systems. Optimized track/train interface. Differentiated standards. Modular systems Rationalised/standardised assets Excellent Customer Service Highly dependable journeys. Paperless ticketing. Personalized real time journey info. Better integration with other modes. Secure travel Low Carbon Systems & Operations Energy efficient trains and operations. Reduced embedded carbon. All electric railway Portable fuel sources. High Capacity Improved infrastructure capability. Improved capacity/flow in stations. Optimised traffic management Optimised utilization of trains. 7X24 railway

Control Command Systems Strategy Objectives Reduce the cost of operating the railway Improve and optimise the operational capability of the railway Technology strategies In-cab Driver Advisory Systems (DAS) Centralisation of control Cab signalling using ERTMS Level 2/3 (lineside signals removed) Intelligent, automated traffic management systems Automatic train operation Driverless trains Technology enablers Accurate train position, speed etc. information in control centres. High capacity data communications systems to link trains with infrastructure

CCS- Intelligent Traffic Management Proposing to develop and introduce next generation of traffic management system in Control Centres: Facilitate the energy – efficient running of trains. Optimise traffic movements to meet differing objectives. Inform timetable improvements. Predict and resolve traffic perturbations over wide areas. Help reduce wear and tear on infrastructure and rolling stock… And more Intelligent traffic Management based on current train speed, position, acceleration and deceleration information (ITM layer) Semi Intelligent traffic management incorporating wide areas conflict prediction and resolution. (Semi ITM layer) Onboard driver advisory systems: Automatic Train Operation (ATO Layer) Basic traffic management, incorporating Automatic Route setting (ARS Layer) Control and Display system (Manual Operation layer) Interlocking and issuing of Movement Authorities (Safety layer)

CCS is the the information signaling, a converging model beyond technologies Feedback Operation rules Back-up ruling Monitoring systems Operation rules Traffic & timetable Traffic Management rules Signals/ radio movement authority Interlocking, RBC, LC, traffic control, area control…. Train detection Switch controls Signal controls ….all objects of the signalling system Information processingSource of information Train moving rules Enforcing of information Execution devices Train on board Physical Devices and Physical constituents Regulatory frame work and monitoring/interaction with ajacent systems Significant interfaces Logical significant (Major) constituents

Under-pinning technologies Intelligent traffic management systems require accurate knowledge about trains: Accurate geospatial position information Speed information Current acceleration and braking capability High Speed track-train data communication required for: Next generation train control Commercial purposes (passengers) Asset condition and performance monitoring (track and train)

Driver Advisory Systems DAS – in cab driver advisory systems to help driver optimise speed profile (but does not override instructions received from signalling system) Benefit of DAS Traction energy saving Reduced acceleration and deceleration (less wear and tear) Reduced risk of passing signals at danger Improved passenger experience (less frequent unplanned stops)

OFC Based Sensors for LC gate CCS

Define standard Train Control and CCS driver M/C interface Automate functions of Loco Pilot - Rail Traffic Management Adopt Train Control Systems for Yard Operations - to reduce Terminal detentions. Introduce Driver Advisory System ( based on Drivers response to Conventional Signalling system) Develop Hybrid satellite navigation overlayed on GSM-R for Low cost Train Control Develop future railway communications – BW for future needs Develop OFC sensing technology for track circuit application Failure management of the Rail Traffic Control System Development of an Incubation Frame work for industry defect reporting, analysis and corrective action system for CCS. Implementation of CCS on Indian Railways shall need intervention for:
