Presentation transcript:

The Liturgy of the Word To define liturgy To describe how the Liturgy of the Word tells the story behind the celebration of the Mass To explain how God is present in His Word What stories do you know from the Bible that should be read out at Mass? Choose one story. Why should it be read out?

The “story-telling” part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Word. It has 6 parts to it. 1.The First Reading 2.The Psalm 3.The Second Reading 4.The Gospel (priest) 5.The Homily (priest) 6.Bidding prayers 1.Write out the 6 stages of the Liturgy of the Word. & match them up to their explanation. 2.Which part of the Liturgy of the Word can you learn most from? Why? **What are the differences between the different kinds of readings? A reading from the OT A reading from NT – from the letters of the apostles. A reading from the NT, about Jesus Prayers based on the readings When the priests talks about the readings. A poem from OT, some written by King David

1. Read the stories. Give each one a title, that explains what it will be about. 2. Choose one story that you like. Explain a.What you can learn about God from this story b.What you can learn about what people are like, or should be like, from this story. **Why is it important to read out Bible stories as part of Mass? Give 2 reasons.

Favourite Stories Tell your partner your favourite bible story. Explain to them what people would learn from it.

Imagine one of these stories is being read out at Mass. With your partner, write 3 bidding prayers, based on this reading. The prayers could 1.be for particular people, that the readings make you think about 2.encourage us to behave in a good way, as the story teaches us 3.hope that God will do something similar for us Read out your bidding prayers. See if the rest of the class can guess which story they were based on.

Open your Bible. Look up one of the inspirational quotes. Write it out on the post it note. Give it to someone. Quotes For Encouragement Deuteronomy 31:6 Isaiah 41:10 Zephaniah 3:17 1 Corinthians 10:13 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Comfort Verses Deuteronomy 31:8 Psalm 9:9 Psalm 23:4 Psalm 55:22 Matthew 11:28-29 Peace Verses John 14:27 John 16:33 Romans 8:6 Philippians 4:6-7 Colossians 3:15
