Genesis Part I: 1-11 Lesson 21: Nature of Wine

Genesis 9 18 And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Ja- pheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. Canaan is one of Noah’s 16 grandsons. America and Australia are inhabited in time of Moses. 19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.

Genesis 9 LXX has γεωργός ( georgos), farmer. Noah becomes George the farmer. 20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: 21 and he drank of the wine, and was drunk- en; and he was uncovered within his tent. Tent means home. LXX has house. Uncovered means naked.

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. Again, Canaan mentioned for reason. Wine and not Ham made Noah naked.

23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the naked- ness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness. If seeing nakedness implies sexuality, there is no need to walk backwards.

24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. Birth order is Japheth, Shem, Ham. Ham took advantage of the wine to bring shame on Noah. Noah thought the wine would be good to drink, but it deceived him.

Nature of Wine 1.Deception i.Composition Proverbs 20 1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. “new” “wine” vs. “new wine”

Wine is translated from ο ἶνος (oinos). Enology is the study of wine. Matthew 9 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. The word “wine” comes from “vine.”

During fermentation, yeast produce liquid (alcohol) and gas (CO 2 ). The word “new” ν έος (neos) indicates the wine is not fermented. Matthew 9 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

CO 2 pressure stretches the wineskins. Matthew 9 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. New wine (unfermented juice) must go in new bottles (unstretched skins).

New wine is translated from γ λεῦκος (gleukos), where we get glucose. Unlike oinos, which may be new or old juice, gleukos is fermented. Acts 2 13 Others mocking said, “These men are full of new wine.” 15 for these are not drunken, as ye sup- pose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

LXX has gleukos for “wine” and omits the word “new.” new oinos + sugar + time = gleukos Job Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. Wine is deceptive since its composition may be unknown.

Why did Timothy only drink water? Nazarites, such as Samson and John the Baptist, did not drink grape juice, nor eat grapes or raisins. I Timothy 5 23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. Timothy knows the deception of wine’s composition.

Nature of Wine 1.Deception i.Composition ii.Opposition Rechabite Blessing vs. Canaanite Curse

Jeremiah 35 1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the L ORD … saying, 2 “Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the L ORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.” God tells Jeremiah to serve wine to the Rechabites.

Jeremiah 35 5 and I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, “Drink ye wine.” 6 But they said, “We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father com- manded us, saying, ‘Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:’ …” The Rechabites refused to drink wine.

Someone today is descended from Rechab. 19 therefore thus saith the L ORD of hosts, the God of Israel; “Jonadab the son of Re- chab shall not want a man to stand before Me for ever.” God blessed the Rechabites for their refusal to drink wine.

Genesis 9 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. 25 And he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a ser- vant of servants shall he be unto his breth- ren.” Although Ham is to blame, his son Canaan is punished. God is placing the curse because He knows the future.

24 And he said, “Blessed be the L ORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27 “God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. Canaan will serve Shem (Israel, Syria, Assyria, Babylon, Persia). Canaan will serve Japheth (Greece and Rome). Genesis 9

Nature of Wine 1.Deception i.Composition ii.Opposition 2.Reception John 2 1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2 and both Jesus was called, and His disci- ples, to the marriage.

Nature of Wine 1.Deception i.Composition ii.Opposition 2.Reception i.Separation II Corinthians 6 17 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate,” saith the Lord, “and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”Isaiah 52:11

Jesus is not the one wanting wine. Note that Mary says “they,” not “we.” Jesus is present but separate. John 2 3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto Him, “They have no wine.” The first “they” is not in the text. It should read, “And lacking wine …”

Elisha and Pharaoh use the expression. The expression indicates separation. John 2 4 Jesus saith unto her, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.” Jesus said, “What to Me and to thee?” The hour refers to His crucifixion.

II Kings 3 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, “What have I to do with thee? Get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother.” In LXX, this is verbatim as John 2:4. Elisha’s purpose was separate from that of King Jehoram the son of Ahab and Jezebel, who worshipped Baal.

II Chronicles But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, “What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war …” In LXX, this is verbatim as John 2:4. Pharaoh Necho’s purpose was separate from that of Josiah king of Judah. Jesus’ purpose is separate from wine.

Nature of Wine 1.Deception i.Composition ii.Opposition 2.Reception i.Separation ii.Saturation Ephesians 5 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

John 2 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine … the gov- ernor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 and saith unto him, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.” Wine may or may not be fermented.

Ephesians 5 18 And be not drunk with wine … μεθύσκεσθε (methyskesthe) Genesis 9 21 … drank of the wine, and was drunken … LXX: ἐ μεθύσθη (emethysthe) John 2 10 … when men have well drunk … μεθυσθώσι (methysthosi)

John 2 10 … when men have well drunk … Some therefore conclude that Jesus made fermented oinos or gleukos. This conclusion is a conjecture because it is based on inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning is fallacious if a counter example exists. μεθυσθώσι (methysthosi)

John 2 10 … when men have well drunk … In LXX, this word is used to indicate being “drunk” with: 1. blood5. milk 2. corn6. water 3. fat7. wine 4. gall8. wisdom μεθυσθώσι (methysthosi) The word means “to be saturated.”

Isaiah 55 (LXX) 10 For as rain shall come down, or snow, from heaven, and shall not return until it have saturated the earth … μεθύσῃ (methysei) Hosea 14 (LXX) 8 They shall return, and dwell under his shadow: they shall live and be satisfied with corn … μεθυσθήσονται (methysthesontai)

We cannot definitively say that the wine Jesus made was alcoholic. However, if Jesus did make alcoholic wine, how is He different than Ham? Habakkuk 2 15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
