After BTC Assembly 2 Exploring our personal responses.

Starter: What do we mean by ‘Cycle of Violence’? Bullying Verbal Abuse Racism Domestic Physical There are many different forms of violence. How many examples can you think of?

Learning Objectives : To understand the importance of personal choice in influencing others and resolving conflicts To develop self-awareness by reflecting on your own feelings and actions. To be able to write a letter including your response to the BTC assembly.

Thinking about forgiveness for violence… When speaking about forgiveness, it is important to think about how you might feel if you had been hurt by somebody.

On your own… Please do not write any names, including yours. Think about a time when your friends let you down, or turned their back on you when you needed them most? Write - what happened, briefly - what you felt like - how you dealt with your anger or other feelings

What advice would you give? As you listen to this person’s story, think what advice you might have given them at the time. How could you have influenced their actions?

On your own… Please do not write any names, including yours. Copy the following table: My strengthsMy weaknesses Then fill in the table with words that describe YOU!

Which of your lists is longer, strengths or weaknesses? We all feel self doubt from time to time: “I’m no good at anything, I’m useless” How do you overcome self-doubt?

After our discussions… What questions would you want to ask the speakers at the assembly? Together with your partner, choose three questions from the list. Discuss: How would YOU answer them?

Your Task: Write a letter to one of the following speakers from the assembly. You could: -Ask any questions you still have -Tell them what mattered to you about their message -Tell them your thoughts on forgiveness Send to: Hans Voll, Breaking the Cycle, Darvell, Robertsbridge, East Sussex, TN32 5DR Teacher add name

Remember how a letter should look? Your Name School Address + Date Dear __________ Thank you so much for the assembly you did for our school… Yours Sincerely, print your name (signature if you wish)

Remember MLK and Gandhi? What did we say they were? ROLE MODELS

Role Models Are people like you! Forgiveness takes courage It takes strength It takes people like you

Thank you Will you forgive?
