Dating ViolenceDating Violence By Lauren and Will

Signs of Abuse These can be some signs of Dating violence:.The individual tries hiding inexplicable injuries. The boyfriend of girlfriend is very controlling over the other. The individuals grades have plummeted or they have started drinking and taking drugs. The individual recently seems depressed and is having behavioral problems. The boyfriend or girlfriend curses at or puts down the other a lot. The girlfriend or boyfriend is abusive towards other people or things

Response to Victim When talking to the suspected victim be clear as to what you are alarmed about. The victim can either tell you what is going on, or they can decide not to talk to you about it. If they want to share with you ask what you can do to help. Do not approach the abuser without asking the victim. Encourage them and try and find ways to make their relationship safer if he or she doesn’t want to leave their boyfriend or girlfriend. If they don’t open up to you encourage them to get help from a trusted adult or counselor. There are many programs and hotlines out there to help victims of an abusive relationship.

Response to Abuser. If you think someone is abusing their boyfriend and girlfriend talk it over with them. Tell them that what they are doing is wrong, and that they should stop. Also listen to what they have to say. Give them advice and tell them of places they can get help. If the abuse gets out of hand report them to an adult or law enforcement.

Example Even innocent looking stars like Chris Brown and Rihanna can be affected by dating violence. The stars were supposed to perform at the Grammy’s that night, but things took an ugly turn for Rihanna. An argument had broken out in a car, and the couple took the fight outside. The argument worsened as they got out of the car. The unidentified couple witnesses had saw was really Rihanna and Chris Brown. Rihanna had suffered visible bruises, cuts, bumps, and other injuries. Chris Brown and his mother had also been abused by his step father which can explain his angry outbreaks. As you can see abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere. If your not cautious and you don’t know the signs an argument can turn in to a lot more.

Innocent to Violent These are pictures of a good night gone bad….

Joan’s Story Joan’s Story* “ My story begins when I was 21 years old. I met a guy that seemed to be a good man. He was very friendly, and for me, that was the most important thing to have in a relationship. We met in September and by the following January, we were living together. The abuse began immediately, he became very jealous and accused me of cheating on him with another man. I did not understand why he was treating me that way. By the end of the month, I was pregnant and my baby was to be born in late October. I thought that my being pregnant would change him, but that was not the case, everything remained the same. The abuse continued. Everytime he hit me, I would leave and go to my sister’s house or sometimes to my mother’s house. I left him many times, but I always returned to be by his side. Then one night in October, shortly after my daughter was born, he became very violent and kicked the crib. Fortunately, the baby was not in the crib. At that moment I began thinking: What would have happened if my baby had been in the crib? I became so scared. That was when I made my final decision to leave him. I left so that he could not continue to hurt me or begin to hurt my daughter. I did not want her to live in a violent home and suffer the consequences. When I made my decision, my family was very understanding. They helped me by giving me support. I left him, but this time it was forever. Now my daughter is 13 years old and I no longer have any contact with him, Joan”

Overview of Story Like many other people’s stories it starts off with them meeting either a great woman or man. In this story her boyfriend became very jealous and protective. That can be a sign of an abusive relationship starting. The girl had a baby to try and change her boyfriend, but he still did not change. If you are going out with a very abusive boyfriend it is going to be very unlikely that he will change his ways. If you are an abusive relationship you should get out of it a.s.a.p unlike Joan who kept coming back. Not only can your abusive boyfriend abuse you they can also hurt other people that mean a lot to you. Like family, friends, pets, etc. Try and be strong and get help from family or hotlines that can help you get through this problem.

Getting Help Hotlines you can call: National Domestic Violence Hotline safe or TTY National Sexual Assault Hotline -- (800) 656-HOPE Stalking Resource Center FYI- CALL, M-F 8:30 AM - 8:30 PM EST, or

What is a restraining order? A restraining order is used to keep space between an abuser and you. If keeps the abuser from hurting, threatening, or reaching relatives, people at your workplace or school, friends, or acquaintances.

Restraining orders There are 3 types of Restraining orders: Emergency restraining order: This can happen if you are in an extreme danger and all the courts are closed. An on call judge can grant one the day you ask of it, and the abuser does not need to be there. Temporary Restraining order: This last until your court hearing or if not for 10 days. Like above it can be granted the day you ask for it without the abuser being there. Final Restraining order: This happens after your final court hearing. At this court hearing the abuser and the victim get to tell their stories. If the restraining order is granted it will last forever unless there is a time limit on it.
