Piracy Trends in the GoA Tactics, Techniques and Procedures Expanding Pirate Hunting Ground Expanding operating areas beyond Somalia - Pirates operating up to 1400nm , often outside the reach of patrolling coalition assets. Hostages used as “human shield” to hinder military disruption efforts. Continued use of dhows as “mothership” to evade detection and extend operating area.

Piracy Trends in the GoA 2010 vs 2011 CAA 1 FEB 2012 Comparing with 2010, last year saw an increase in pirate attempts but decrease in pirated ships. Currently, the pirates are holding on to 5 ships (154 hostages) at their pirate anchorages (as compared to 45 ships in 2010.)
