This first Unit discusses the importance of marketing and the fact that marketing is all around us. A passing hiker in a national park might be wearing a t- shirt with a corporate logo. A sign on the side of a country road could announce fresh eggs for sale. In a mall or a major city, the marketing is much more intense. Everywhere you look, you see signs, brands, and ads. Marketers understand that for a good or service to be successful, they first have to find out who needs it or has an interest in it. Marketers must determine who their potential customers are among many diverse groups of people.

SITUATION: You are to assume the role of supervisor for a group of customer service representatives at a franchised auto dealership. The dealership’s mission for handling customer complaints is to “do what needs to be done in order to ensure customer satisfaction.” This policy is part of the franchise agreement with the auto manufacturer. A recent report from the auto manufacturer indicated that your customer service representatives are not handling customer complaints uniformly, nor are they receiving goods grades in follow-up customer satisfaction surveys. This poor evaluation has led to problems among your employees, who are trying to put the blame elsewhere. ACTIVITY: The general manager of the auto dealership wants to know how you plan to resolve this problem with your employees. He has asked you to prepare a plan for an upcoming staff meeting, where you address this issue. He wants to see an outline of your plan and hear exactly how you will conduct the staff meeting. EVALUATION: You will be evaluated on how well you meet the following performance indicators: - Explain the nature of positive customer/client relations - Foster positive working relationships - Give directions for completing job tasks - Conduct staff meetings - Establish standards for job performance.
