Understanding Knowledge There is More to Knowledge than Might be Known

Overview Knowledge Management Application Implementation

What is Knowledge Vital asset of any organization Defined by –Domain(s) (Law) –Actual Needs (Legal Practice) –Practical Possibilities (Legal Manageability)

Management Knowledge Base KM Processes –Acquisition (+ Creation) –Validation, Evaluation –Storage –Maintenance (+ Enrichment) –Distribution

Application Knowledge is used –To do the work –To teach others to do the work –To improve the organization (eventually…) Knowledge should be used –To improve the organization now!

Implementation The past: –Knowledge is shared among humans –KM is a separate, disconnected process The future: –Knowledge is directly integrated into the solution –KM is an integral part of IM

Developing Knowledge

What to do? Focus on the business, not on the tools! –Establish boundaries –Define standards Be humans, not machines! –Think, invent, create –Use automation to your benefit
