Cell Organelles

Like a major city, a cell teems with specialized workers that carry out its daily operations— making energy, moving proteins, or helping with other tasks. Researchers took microscopic pictures of thin layers of a cell and then combined them to make this 3-D image featuring color-coded organelles—the cell’s “workers.”

An organelle is… A tiny structure that performs a special job in the cell. A tiny structure that performs a special job in the cell.

Nucleus Controls all the functions of the cell Controls all the functions of the cell “the brain” “the brain”

Nuclear Membrane Covers the Nucleus Covers the Nucleus

Golgi Apparatus a.k.a Golgi Bodies Packages, sorts and sends substances Packages, sorts and sends substances “the post office” “the post office”

Endoplasmic Reticulum System of channels to transport substances. System of channels to transport substances. “Train system” “Train system”

Rough E.R. Has ribosomes on it and produces proteins Has ribosomes on it and produces proteins

Smooth E.R. Plain endoplasmic reticulum does not have ribosomes on it Plain endoplasmic reticulum does not have ribosomes on it

Ribosomes Produces proteins Produces proteins “Protein factory” “Protein factory”

Cell Membrane EVERY cell has a cell membrane. EVERY cell has a cell membrane. Is semi-permeable, allows only certain things in and out Is semi-permeable, allows only certain things in and out “the gate keeper” “the gate keeper”

Cytoplasm The jelly-like inside of a cell. The jelly-like inside of a cell.

Mitochondria Makes energy for the cell Makes energy for the cell “ the power house” “ the power house”

Lysosomes Contains digestive enzymes Contains digestive enzymes “Little Stomach” “Little Stomach”

Vacuole Can store food or water, whatever the cell needs Can store food or water, whatever the cell needs “the closet” “the closet”

Microtubule Large, hollow tubes that help shape the cell Large, hollow tubes that help shape the cell Part of the cytoskeleton Part of the cytoskeleton

Microfilament Small, solid rods that help shape the cell Small, solid rods that help shape the cell

Special Plant Organelles

1. Plastids Storage compartments Storage compartments Color Color food food Example: Leucoplasts- starch (p_______) Example: Leucoplasts- starch (p_______) Example: Chromoplast- stores color (red) Example: Chromoplast- stores color (red) (t_________, a______,) (t_________, a______,)

2. Chloroplasts Use light energy to make chemical energy. Use light energy to make chemical energy. The energy produced is called ATP The energy produced is called ATP

3. Cell Wall Mostly made of cellulose and pectin Mostly made of cellulose and pectin
