Tissues & The Systems they Compose

What are Tissues? Tissues are an interactive group of cells and intercellular substances that take part in one or more particular tasks.

What are Organs? Organs are structures consisting of different tissues that are organized in specific proportions and patterns for a particular function.

What are Organs Systems? Organ systems are composed of two or more organs that are interacting physically and/or chemically to perform a common task.

Tissue Types Epithelial Connective Muscle Nervous

Epithelial Tissue A tissue of 1 or more layers of adhering cells that covers the body’s external surfaces and lines the internal cavities and tubes, and may be important in absorption or secretion. It has a free surface where it meets its surrounding and a basement layer where it meets underlying connective tissue.

Classification of Epithelial Tissue 1.Number of Layers –Simple Epithelium –Stratified Epithelium 2.Shape –Cuboidal –Columnar –Squamous

Connective Tissue A tissue composed of varying amounts of fibroblasts, other cells, fiber secretions (mostly collagen and elastin), and modified polysaccharide ground substances. It functions to bind and support other tissues.

Muscle Tissue A tissue composed of generally long cells that have the ability to contract under stimulation, passively lengthen, and return to a resting position.

Muscle Types 1.Skeletal – cells are multinucleated, striated and under conscious control. 2.Smooth – cells contain a single nucleus, are not striated or under conscious control. 3.Cardiac – cells are multinucleated, striated and not under conscious control.

Nervous Tissue A tissue composed of cells called neurons that have the ability to change state when stimulated and transfer that state to adjacent cells. Nervous tissue contains glial cells that support the functioning of neurons as well.
