INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is…. “The study of the composition of matter, and the changes that it undergoes.”

Chemistry is divided into 5 major areas of study…

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY is the chemistry of substances containing CARBON

Like CAFFEINE!

INORGANIC CHEMISTRY is mostly about substances that do not contain carbon

What substance does a sample contain, and how much? Analytical chemistry:

Physical Chemistry applies the methods of physics to the study of chemistry. It is theoretical and involves a lot of math.

BIOCHEMISTRY is the chemistry of living organisms.

Why should we study chemistry?

Everything we are… everything we do – is CHEMISTRY!

We are made of chemicals

We breathe chemicals (air).

We wear chemicals (clothes).

We eat chemicals (food). etc., etc…

The best reason to study chemistry is to understand how things work.

Another important reason is: To Make choices

Finally, there are a number of rewarding occupations that require chemistry!

What aspects of life involve chemistry?

ENERGY

MATERIALS

MEDICINE AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

AGRICULTURE

ENVIRONMENT

ASTRONOMY AND SPACE EXPLORATION

Chemistry is a part of all aspects of life!
