STRATEGIC PLANNING Board of Health Update January 16, 2014

HKPR Strategic Plan Simply put, strategic planning is the process of defining/confirming an organization’s vision, mission and values, determining priorities and developing strategies to address them.

HKPR Strategic Plan Previous three year Strategic Plan approved in March 2009 Have achieved many of the identified priorities (e.g., Developed organizational Values – Accountability, Collaboration, Communication, Professionalism, Respect) Work still continuing on remaining priorities and some, such as IT have become established committees with annual work plans, etc.

HKPR Strategic Plan In November 2012, work began on refreshing Strategic Plan Interviews were conducted with Board of Health members and Management Management and BOH members met to discuss and develop strategic priorities

HKPR Strategic Plan During those meetings, Management and BOH: –Reviewed previous Strategic Plan –Reviewed provincial and organizational changes since 2009 –Reviewed pre-meeting interview responses –Discussed background reports released since 2009 –Looked at demographic reports and discussed communities

HKPR Strategic Plan Three Strategic Priorities were developed: Social Determinants of Health Mental Health Communications

HKPR Strategic Plan Draft success indicators, action plans, accountability and timelines were identified for each priority Mission and Vision statement were drafted, and then refined at a later Management meeting

HKPR Strategic Plan Mission – Together with our communities, we promote and protect the health of those who live, work, learn and play in our area. Vision – Striving for improved health for all

HKPR Strategic Plan Last year, staff and Board of Health members were sent a link to complete a survey on the Strategic Priorities

HKPR Strategic Plan Next Steps Three separate working committees formed to guide work of Strategic Priorities Committees will be comprised of staff and Management and should include representation from all departments

Communicate the Strategic Plan Framework and intended action items to staff at ASD in Keep DHAC. Update the Terms of Reference for this committee. Include/link key messages related to the SDOH into the HKPRDHU Communications Strategic Plan. Key messages to be determined by DHAC. Social Determinants Of Health

SDOH Actions Conduct assessment of how the SDOH relate to specific department objectives and requirements (OPHS). A pre-assessment of staff knowledge relating to SDOH. This will serve as a benchmark for suggested SDOH Health Unit Indicators. Program departments to complete one Health Equity Impact Assessment (HEIA) for one program or activity for This work to be facilitated and supported by the SDOH nurses.

New initiative Creation of our “road map” –Logic model –Goal: to make mental health an integral component of health –Internal and external components –Objectives and activities Mental Health

Recommended actions: –Let staff know about the plan –Create a mental health strategic plan workgroup with staff and management –Work with the communications group to include mental health messaging –Work with Workplace Stress Committee – Guarding Work

Use Strategic Priority as opportunity to build stronger foundation for organizational communications – externally and internally Improve collaboration and planning to provide organizational communications and joint program-related communication plans Strengthen budget allocation to support organizational communication initiatives Communications

Action Plan: -Better utilize paid and earned media opportunities to increase awareness -Increase utilization of social media platforms -Create speakers’ bureau to speak to groups and conduct displays at community events -Create Healthy Communities Award -Develop telephone hotline for physicians and residents

HKPR Strategic Plan Next Steps One page chart developed that outlines Strategic Priorities, what the Health Unit is doing and how it will impact communities Chart and questions to be sent to external stakeholders –partners suggested by staff Questions include indicators of success, whether community groups wish to partner in Health Unit’s work, suggested areas of improvement
