Making the Pieces Fit with Course Outcomes College Student Success Instructor Training August 2011

How do you envision learning? Are you engaged? Are your students engaged? Our purpose is found in what “spins off” …..what transfers from the classroom to The home The workplace The community Future learning experiences

Course outcomes begin with one question….. What do our students need to be able to DO “out there”…..in their rest of life experiences…that we are responsible for in the classroom? In outcomes based learning….this question guides course design. Work Home Community

Outcomes Based Learning Content no longer comes first Outcomes justify the content Focus on what students need to understand…and what skills they need to master Process skills are those things the student needs to master in order to achieve the outcomes

Process Skills Are used across every discipline…. Need to show up in every program and course PROCESS SKILLS –Apply communication skills to gain assistance with goal specific planning –Develop and utilize basic educational skills –Participate in service activities that promote commitment to lifelong learning and personal engagement –Complete a variety of self assessment techniques to support personal engagement –Identify priorities, barriers and time management opportunities through journaling –Identify opportunities for education in diversity

Four Questions for Outcomes Assessment 1.What are the intended outcomes? 2.What are the concepts and issues students must understand? 3.What are the process skills they must develop? 4.How do we ask our students to show evidence of the outcomes—collectively or individually?
