Text Pages Title is centered on first page of text. All paragraphs are indented ½ inch Everything is 1.5 spaced Abstract not required No table of contents

Citations Short quotes with fewer than 40 words are incorporated into text and enclosed by quotation marks. Example: “Approximately 27% of the workforce displays poor emotional intelligence.” (APA, 2001, p. 121).

Citations (cont.) Quote in middle of sentence. End the passage with quotation marks, cite the source in parentheses immediately after the quotation marks and continue the sentence with no period. Example: She stated, “The placebo effect disappeared” (APA, 2001, p. 121) but she did not clarify.

Citations (cont.) Quote at end of sentence. End quote with the punctuation outside the final parenthesis. Example: Miele (1993) found “the placebo effect disappeared” (p. 276). Text for the next sentence.

The Block Quote Each line in a block quote is indented 5 spaces and does not have quotation marks Cite the quoted source after the final punctuation mark.

The Block Quote - Example Example: Miele (1993) found the following: The placebo effect which had been verified in previous studies, disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner. Furthermore, the behaviors were never exhibited again (p. 276).

Paraphrasing (preferred) Page and/or paragraph numbers only required for direct quotes. Example: Emotional intelligence is the ability to accurately perceive emotions in self and others, and to use emotional information to make intelligent decisions (Goleman, 2000).

Electronic References Documents retrieved from the internet should include author (or site name), document title, date retrieved and URL (uniform resource locator) If no author, use title, company or site name –First word of reference must match citation For more information see:

Example of Electronic Article Fredrickson, B. L. (2000, March 7). Cultivating positive emotions to optimize health and well-being. Prevention & Treatment. Retrieved November 20, 2000, from

Example of Web Page Reference GVU's 8th WWW user survey. (n.d.). Retrieved August 8, 2000 from 10/ Heston, Mike. (2001). Comparing and Contrasting PCs and Mainframes. Retrieved May 9, 2002 from the World Wide Web:

Common APA Felonies Not double spacing EVERYTHING Having justified right edge Wrong format for citations –Quotes need 3 things (author’s last name, year of publication, and pg/para number) –When paraphrasing use (Name, Year) Wrong format for references –Indent first line, begin with name Listing references without citations Failing to cite paraphrased text
