Building a Collaborative Writing Experience Jennifer Smolka, PhD Walden WOODS Program Director PhD in Education

Learning Outcomes Discuss best practices for faculty involvement in collaborative writing experiences. Share innovative technology to foster authentic growth during the writing experience. Explore strategies that they could use in the future to support students in gaining writing competencies.

Agenda Poll on writing support tools. Presentation on Strategies and Best Practices for Doctoral Writing Skill Growth Demonstration of Digital Graphic Organizers Matched Writing Center & Resources Conclusion: What support do you need?

Introduction The intellectual development of a scholar practitioner includes a tremendous amount of facilitated growth and change in the area of writing and the development of a scholarly voice. To be a change agent of writing for our students, dissertation and doctoral study chairs need to have a variety of strategies and tools to support a collaborative writing environment.

Introduction By implementing technology tools including digital graphic organizers, screen sharing, and advanced Word features, faculty can bridge the distance to provide a scaffolded learning experience that is inclusive of multiple learning styles.

Strategies Prewriting: –Graphic Organizers & Concept Maps Writing: –Track Changes –Comment Bubbles –Phone & Video Conversations Revision: –Screen sharing –Make a Date with Paper

Survey Results Encourage them to write in phases, with a first draft that has permission to be a mess. :) I give them ideas for breaking the writing process down into smaller pieces, using checklists to help them move through what can be a daunting task. I ask directive but open-ended questions to get them thinking about their assumptions and how their reader sees their work. Wikis and Skype

Digital Graphic Organizers Use graphic organizers at the beginning of the writing process. –Conceptualization –Organization –Structure Inspiration/Webspiration Bubbl.us Cacoo

Screen Sharing Using screen sharing with voice and/or video when conferencing to discuss revision comments will help different types of learners see, hear and understand the areas for improvement. –LiveMeeting (Walden Accounts) –Skype (Free) –Join Me (Free) –Jing (Asynchrous) Free & Small Pro Fee University is making decisions on official options.

Advanced Word Track Changes Comment Bubbles –Ask students to add their initials and any questions that they have within the bubble. –To remove or not to remove? Compare documents Faster Feedback –Auto Correct –Auto Text Embedded Audio Feedback

Conclusion What support do you need from Walden to facilitate the writing process with students?

Survey Results Align foundation course skills with assessment. Then assess to see if a student has the skills. If not provide mandatory remediation. I am curious to hear what other faculty do right now or have in mind for collaborating with students on research projects. I would like to do that in the context of my teaching and scholarship at Walden, too. Encouragement about what collaboration is... that it isn't dividing the task into small parts and assigning them, but that they must co-create new knowledge as a group
