Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids Review
 The Periodic Table is a list of all the known elements.  It is organized by increasing atomic number. Remember… The atomic number tells you how many.
Metals Metalloids Nonmetals share some properties of metals and some of nonmetals. some are shiny some are dull some are malleable and some are not some.
 There are currently 118 discovered elements  They are arranged in increasing atomic number in the periodic table  The vertical columns of the table.

Metals, Nonmetals and Metalloids Video TEKS 6.6A compare metals, nonmetals and metalloids using physical properties such as luster, conductivity or malleability TEKS 8.5C interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements

Elements are classified into three groups on the Table.

The groups are metals, metalloids and nonmetals.

Elements in the same group have similar physical and chemical properties.

Physical properties are: Luster = reflect light. (metallic or nonmetallic).

Conductivity = conducts electricity. Tested with a conductivity meter.

Malleability = can be hammered into sheets without breaking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c382ziUpbbc

Ductility = can be pulled into a thin wire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c382ziUpbbc

Brittle = breaks easily.

METALS BrainPop Metals

METALS are.. Solid at room temperature. *Except for mercury, which is a liquid.

METALS are.. 2) Good conductors of electricity and heat. *But some are better conductors than others!

METALS are… 3) Lusterous which has a shiny/metallic appearance.

4) Malleable and can be hammered into sheets without breaking. METALS are.. 4) Malleable and can be hammered into sheets without breaking.

5) Ductile and can be drawn into wire. METALS are.. 5) Ductile and can be drawn into wire.

METALS are.. 6) Sometimes Magnetic

NONMETALS are… on the right of the zigzag line on the Table. nonmetals

1) Solid, liquid or gas at room temperature. NONMETALS are… 1) Solid, liquid or gas at room temperature.

2) Bad (Poor) conductors of electricity and heat. NONMETALS are… 2) Bad (Poor) conductors of electricity and heat.

NONMETALS are… 3) Not lusterous and not shiny/nonmetallic in appearance.

NONMETALS are… 4) Brittle when they are solid.

NONMETALS are… 5) Never Magnetic

On the zigzag line on the Table. METALLOIDS.. On the zigzag line on the Table. metalloids

*Exception is Aluminum. It is considered to be a metal even though it lies along the zigzag.

METALLOIDS.. Have no set characteristics. Share properties of both metals and nonmetals

Examples Good Conductor and Brittle Lusterous and Brittle Magnetic and Brittle.

boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, tellurium and polonium . Metalloids include:
