© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2 WP2.1 Building capacity for advanced regional data assimilation (MetO) WP2.2 Dynamical downscaling of ERA (SMHI). WP2.3 2D mesoscale downscaling (Météo France). WP2.4 Evaluation (MeteoSwiss). WP2.5 Improvement of input data for reanalyses (UEA) Now

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2.1 Highlights Initial UM 4D-Var reanalysis run for period. UM data now stored in MARS archive (with assistance from ECMWF) for joint evaluation/user access (see Renshaw talk). Initial Intercomparison EURO4M Orography

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2.1 Highlights Focus now on full observation rerun (satellite, cloud), provision of data for joint evaluation (-> WP2.4), CIBs (->WP3), and data provision (->WP4). Validation of climate indices (Peter Jermey) Cloud from SYNOP reports

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2.2 Highlights HIRLAM 3D-Var reanalysis completed ~50% of 20yr period ( , ). Evaluation against ERA performed: Focus now on completing period and intercomparison period (- >WP2.1, WP2.4). November 1996 Precipitation: HIRLAMERA

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office HIRLAM 22 km MESAN 5 km E-OBS 6.0 obs E-OBS 7.0, 0.25° EURO4M WP2.3 Highlights (SMHI) Daily precipitation reanalysis begun (D2.4), comparison with E-OBS (->WP2.4). Future: Complete precip analysis, but only few years for U10?

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office MESCAN-Europe at 5.5km Use the HIRLAM 3Dvar re-analyses at 22km 2D-Downscaling MESCAN run at ECMWF, use GL software (SMHI) to downscale the HIRLAM 22km file to 5.5km: T2m, Hu2m, Wind, RR24, LWD, SWD,Ps ECA&D datasets of 24-h precipitation observation not straightforward to be used, so we mainly rely on the MF GTS observation files. MESCAN T2m, Hu2m is performed every 6 hours and a 24-h precipitation analysis is done at 06UTC 1 month of analysis takes ~ 30h, so 4 years in ~2 months, if no other technical problem! Re-analyses for 3 months have been done for Dec2009, Jan2010 and June 2010 (period used for the SAFRAN/MESAN comparison D2.10) for testing and validation purposes. Monthly mean of daily HIRLAM first-guess accumulated precipitation (mm) for Dec 2009 Monthly mean of daily MESCAN analysed accumulated precipitation (mm) Dec 2009

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2.3 Highlights (MF) New EnsVar technique to provide ensemble covariance for 2D analysis (D2.5). OI precip analysis produced (see Bazille talk). Now able to use ECA&D obs from WP1. Heidke Skill Score Oct 2009 June 2010 (France) MESCAN daily precipitation analysis (blue) gives better HSS than SAFRAN for RR24 > 5mm/day. Nevertheless, over the Alps, M. Lafaysse has shown that SURFEX/Crocus forced by SAFRAN is still better than forced by MESCAN more specific development is required.

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2.4 Highlights Evaluation activities to date: MO focus on evaluation of UM reanalysis against ERA, ECA&D and observations (->WP1) and via climate CIBs (->WP3). Renshaw talk. MS initial focus on Alpine ( ) precipitation using ERA, HIRLAM data (->WP2.2). See Isotta talk. SMHI/MF focus (->WP2.3) on precipitation evaluation (Oct 2009 – June >WP2.3). See SMHI and MF talks. DWD: Evaluation of HIRLAM reanalysis (->WP2.2) using satellite data (->WP1.2) for period. See Trentmann talk. Future: Evaluation is major focus to bring together WP1 and WP2. (D2.7- D2.13) in last year of project.

EURO4M WP2.5 Highlights WP2.5 Improvement of input data for reanalyses (UEA): Improved QC/ homogenization of surface data for reanalyses (sea-level pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and direction and temperature). Future: Further improvements to QC. Use in WP2 evaluation/reanalysis?

© Crown Copyright Source: Met Office EURO4M WP2 Deliverables/Milestones Year 1 Year 2 Year 3Year 4 Now Deliverables on track but need to discuss D2.3-D2.5. Year 1-2, largely preparation (much technical work). Year 3-4 pre-production runs plus evaluation (enhanced collaboration).
