Chapter 10 Lesson 2 Mixtures Pgs. 456-463

A physical combination of two or more kinds of matter is called a mixture.

Each kind of matter in a mixture keeps its own chemical properties.

Many everyday products, including the food you eat and the clothing you wear, are mixtures

A mixture that is blended completely is called a solution. saltwater

Salt water is a good conductor of electricity.

A solution might have properties that the original materials did not have. Steel is made by mixing iron and carbon. It is much stronger than the original iron.

Bronze is an alloy made of copper and tin. A mixture of two or more metals or a metal and a nonmetal is called an alloy. Bronze is an alloy made of copper and tin.

The materials in a mixture can be separated by using their physical properties.

Solids are often separated from a liquid by using a filter.

Using a filter to separate a mixture is called filtration.

A mixture containing certain metals can be separated using a magnet.

Salt crystals left behind after the evaporation of salt water. Solids can be separated from a solution by using evaporation; the liquid part of the solution is lost to the air. Salt crystals left behind after the evaporation of salt water.

Liquid water can be collected from a solution of salt water by distillation.

Alloys- mixtures of metals that can be stronger than the original. Food- mixtures that may taste better together than by themselves. Magnets can be used to separate mixtures.
