Magnesium ( Mg) Atomic number: 12 Atomic mass: Solid, liquid, or gas? Metalloid, metal, or nonmetal?

Magnesium’s Family Family name: Alkaline Earth Metals Discovered by: Joseph Black in It is during the early 1700s that it seems Black began his work on the chemistry of "magnesia alba". These experiments involved the very first careful gravimetric (weight) measurements on changes brought about when heating magnesia alba and reacting the products with acids or alkalis.

How it is used! 1. It produces brilliant light that is made in photography, flares, and bombs. 2. The metal is widely used in the manufacturing of phones, computers, and cameras. 3. Organic magnesium compounds are important in the synthesis of organic molecules.

Physical, Chemical Properties Silvery-White Low Density Reasonably Strong Metal Good Corrosion Resistance Good High Temperature, Mechanical Properties

3 Interesting Facts The metal reacts with water to produce hydrogen gas. Magnesium powder is an explosive hazard. When it burns in air, magnesium produces a brilliant white lights.

Some facts I bet you didn’t know!! Magnesium is found in many different things including green vegetables such as spinach. They are good sources of magnesium because the center of the chlorophyll molecule contains it. Beans, nuts, and seeds are also good sources of magnesium. Bread made from whole grain wheat flour provides more magnesium than bread made from white refined flour. Tap water can be a source of magnesium, but the amount varies according to the water supply. Water that naturally contains more minerals is described as "hard". "Hard" water contains more magnesium than "soft" water.
