as of 8/31/15 Cyberbullying

Learning Target: I can learn how to protect myself from cyberbullies. Success Criterion: I can identify 3 types of cyberbullying. I can identify 2 ways to deal with a cyberbully.

Bullying happens… whenever someone uses his or her power unfairly and repeatedly to hurt someone. Bully Behavior Hurting someone’s body or possessions. Hurting someone’s feelings. Hurting someone’s friendships.

So what is cyberbullying? bullying behaviors that are initiated on an electronic device, such as, a cell phone, tablet or computer. Cyberbullying IS bullying! The only difference is that it happens online.  Cyberbullying is never okay.  It is just as serious as “real-life” bullying.

Types of Cyberbullying  Flaming: fighting online with angry messages or inappropriate language  Harassment: sending rude/inappropriate messages/photos over and over  Denigration: “Dissing” online, gossip/rumors  Impersonation: pretending to be someone and then causing problems for that person  Outing or Tricking: sharing secrets, embarrassing a person

Brainstorm Have you (or someone you know) ever been a victim of cyberbullying? What did that look like?

What if this happens to me? You have some options:  Block the person.  Log off  Report the abuse to the website. *If you are bullied by , do not delete the . Show it to an adult. Do NOT continue the communication.

What if this happens to me?  Talk to an adult.  If you know someone is being bullied online, don’t just stand by and watch – tell an adult. *If you are bullied on your school , tell an adult immediately.

 The camera is for school activities.  Do not take a picture or video of someone unless they have told you it’s ok.  Altering a picture of someone and posting for others to see is cyberbullying. Am I in danger of becoming a cyberbully?

 School is for school use.  Use good “netiquette.”  Don’t when you are upset.

What are appropriate ways to use ?  Turning in your assignment to a teacher.  Asking a teacher a school related question.  Sending an assignment to a classmate for peer editing.  Working on a collaborative assignment with a classmate.

What are inappropriate ways to use ?  Sending mean or inappropriate messages.  Sending a threatening .  Sending an to a friend during class.  Sending pictures of someone without permission.  Sending personal information, like your address or pictures/videos of yourself.  Bothering someone by sending repeated s.

When should you NOT send an ?  When angry, upset, or highly emotional.  In retaliation to something someone else did, said, or wrote.  In class or when you should be doing school-related activities.

School Reminders  Remember: your school is NOT private.  Before you send an , ask yourself:  Would I feel ok if my teachers, principals, or my parents were to read this ?  If the answer is NO, then you shouldn’t be sending the .

You’ve got too much mail!  Do not use your school for “texting.”  Clean up your mailbox regularly by deleting s that you no longer need.  Remember old s can “disappear” from your iPad after two weeks.  Go to gwweb.vansd.org to access or delete old s.

Mix and Match

Your turn!

Cyberbullying Scenarios 1.As a group look at the scenarios. 2.Pick one and with your partner(s) discuss: – Is this cyberbullying, why? – What you would do if this happened to you? – What you would do if you saw this happening to someone else? – Is there anything you could do to prevent this from happening to you?

Scenarios 1.A neighbor who often calls you names at school has been posting rude comments to you over and over online. 2.A classmate has been sending you threats using school . 3.A classmate has been taking pictures of you in class and is sending them to their friends. 4.A friend is getting into your and sending rude messages to people from you.
