Worldwide Importance of Certain Diseases LESSON OBJECTIVE: Discuss the global impact of malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

 Part of the United Nations  Established in 1948  HQ in Geneva, Switzerland  Exists to promote good health for all people on Earth and combat infectious diseases  Successes include official declaration of eradication of small pox in 1980  Currently aiming to eliminate polio in next few years

Malaria - Epidemiology  300 million people are affected  3 million people die each year from malaria  Disease restricted to tropical regions where Anopheles mosquito survives  Potential risk of disease spreading due to climate change

HIV/AIDS Epidemiology  Rapidly spreading pandemic  Numbers infected unclear but could be near 50 million (almost 50% in Africa)  Over 2 million die each year from it  Spreading quickly in China & Russia

Tuberculosis - Epidemiology  One third of the world’s population carry the bacteria  Of that 10-15% go on to display symptoms  Just under 2 million people a year die of the disease  Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa & Eastern Europe are the most prevalent areas

Your Task You are going to research the global impact of either malaria, HIV/AIDS or TB You are allocated $2 billion to spend combating the disease Research and collect referenced/validated data on: 1.Overall impact of the disease 2.Cost of the disease as far as human suffering, days of work lost, numbers affected etc 3.Type of treatment programme 4.Cost of treatment programme and numbers of people that will benefit Be prepared to present your bid next week in front of the class and hand in your report for marking
