Fonts and animation? Background music (5. Music) Transition National Senior Certificate: Subject choices and University entrance requirements 2009 23 September 2007 CFC van der Walt (assisted by Prof Nic Kotze) Presentation to NWU Council

Summary: Current Requirements for new National Senior Certificate (NSC) – No regulations yet First holders of South African NSC to apply for admission in 2009 New subjects, in two categories, no “higher” and “standard” grade subjects and new achievement levels in NSC Approved subjects for grades 10-12 are indicated as “Recognised” subjects, of which some are further indicated as “Designated” subjects All subjects carry 20 credits, except Life Orientation with 10 credits, also not externally assessed Required for the NSC: Four compulsory subjects: – Two official languages, being a LOT (at 3=40%-49%) and an official language at first additional level (at 2=30%-39%) – Life Orientation (at 3=40%-49%) – Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (at 2=30%-39%) PLUS three elective subjects, one at 3=40%-49% and others at 2=30%-39% Bullet type, colour and animation?

NWU Approach for 2009 In setting admission and placement requirements for 2009: Six subjects will be counted to compute the APS because a learner can attain an NSC after condonation of one subject in which a 1 (0%-29%) had been achieved. By 2009 the APS will be automatically computed by the NWU Student System. The admission approach of “the most applicable assumed learning” (i.e. looking at outcome skills from NSC subjects) currently followed by the NWU is applied in advising learners, teachers and parents about learners’ subject choices for the NSC from 2007. All NSC subjects (whether designated or merely recognised) are counted on the same basis, e.g. an achievement at level 5 in Tourism and a level 5 in Mathematics will both count 5 towards the APS. In the light of the current development stage of the NSC dispensation this will ensure greater uniformity, clarity and simplicity, to be refined as experience with the new NSC subjects grows.
