Green Gazette VOL 13, Issue 3 October 2013 Benson High School JROTC Domestic Violence Awareness Miss Nebraska 2013, JaCee Pilkington will be participating in our walk this year on November 1 st. This is a great opportunity to bring positive light to Benson and the Community Outreach Service our students are doing. The Student Senate will have a Powder Puff Game immediately following the walk. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time for the Benson community to come together and build awareness and a movement towards safe and healthy relationships for all individuals and families. Domestic violence touches every person in our high school, community and society as a whole; and violates a person’s dignity, safety, and basic human rights. Cadets from Benson Junior ROTC are standing up as a champion for survivors and are encouraging others to join the movement for a safer and healthier community by joining us at one or more of our October awareness events! Ribbon Campaign: Purple is the color for the Month. Cadets hand out purple ribbons to wear to bring national awareness to the issues faced by battered women and their children. Oct 28-Nov 1 Table Tent Campaign: Table tents with a reminder that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and information about services and how to access them are distributed on the library tables. Month of October Educational presentation on Domestic Violence: Cadet produced presentation that is available to be watched in each advisement class. Information Booth: Cadets, school social worker Ms. Julie Mason and educational outreach members from the Women’s Center for Advancement (222 S 29th St Omaha, NE 68131) pass out literature during lunch and answer questions Oct 28-Nov 1 Walk against Domestic Violence. As a National Day of Unity to remember those who have suffered and died from domestic violence and to celebrate the work being done to end violence an all school walk is held. Men are asked to walk a lap in her shoes, literally. High heeled shoes are provided as young men take on the challenge of a new experience and a new awareness. The media is invited to cover the event.: Nov 1 at 3:00 pm Clothing Drive & More: Cadets collect items needed by WCA in the month of October to include: Cell phones with chargers/Band Aids/Backpacks/ Career Clothing, Shoes, Purses and Accessories /Baby Bottles /Deodorant Diapers/Pull Ups /Duffel Bags/ Hygiene Products THE CHILDREN NEXT DOOR recounts the fear and pain of domestic violence through the eyes of a child. The film takes us on a young family’s journey to discover the solution to end a reoccurring cycle of violence and the truth that lies beneath. Cadets will attend the viewing on October 10th on the UNO Campus. During October a special screening is being planned at the Benson library after school for students and their parents with staff from the WCA to help facilitate.
