If you have MS Office 2010, embedding a video only has a few steps, but if you have MS Office 2007 or earlier, it is a little bit more complicated. It will be much easier to follow these steps with a printed copy of this PPT and a computer in front of you. I guarantee you will be thinking, “There must be an easier way to do this!” Unfortunately, there isn’t, but once you do it a few times you will get the hang of it.”
Open up Powerpoint on your computer and add a blank slide. You will use this when you get to Step #5.
Adding “Developer Tab” On Your tabs at the very top you see “home,” “insert,” “Design,” etc. We need to add a tab called “Developer.” The reason Microsoft did not add a Developer tab was because of a glitch in their software production. Follow the steps below to add developer tab. 1. On the top left hand corner click on your office button, which is the round Microsoft symbol. 2. Click on Powerpoint Options on the bottom. 3. Click the box Show developer tab in Ribbon and click “o.k.” on the bottom of the screen. 4. On your tool bar you will now notice you have added the Developer tab as an option.
Cracking the Code! Use my video first to try this out, then you can try it on your own. This video is about an Autistic girl who learns to express herself through writing. I searched YouTube for the video I wanted and copied the URL. Next, we will need to change some code. I made the font larger of the code we need to change in the URL. watch?v= 4XMlhCfp3Qhttp:// watch?v= 4XMlhCfp3Q Notice the code I changed. I changed the large font up top to the large font below. I replaced watch?v= with /v/. /v/ F4XMlhCfp3Q Now Highlight and copy the URL above that was changed.
ARE YOU STILL WITH ME! I told you would be thinking, “there must be an easier way” You would think Microsoft would make this easier!
Embedding the Video Now you are going to use your blank slide to do this next step. 1. Click on the Developer tab we added. 2. Click on the hammer with a tool crossed which is called “more tools.” 3. Scroll down and Click on “Shockwave Flash Object” 4. When you do this your curser will change to a cross and you will be able to draw a square on your blank slide. The square will be the size of your video so you can make it a small or large square. Draw this now on your blank slide.
Right Click on your square and click on Properties and an index screen will appear. You are now going to paste the URL code into the “Movie” box. And close it out by clicking the red “x.” Do not paste the URL into Movie data this is a common mistake. Just look for Movie.
Click on Slide Show and hit Current Slide and Your Video should appear. Now you can play it. You need to be in slide show mode for video to play. I know this seems complicated, but once you have done it once, it will only take a few minutes in the future. You will need internet access as your are using this powerpoint to play video. My next lesson will be on how to download a video to your computer and embed into powerpoint. This is also a good option, but it takes up a lot of space on your computer. Good Luck!
