Objective ICT : CSA and NoE Challenge 1: Pervasive and Trustworthy Network and Service Infrastructures Objective ICT : The Network of the Future d) Coordination/ Support actions and Networks of Excellence Coordination of research efforts to explore synergies across on- going national initiatives and with third countries (priority is with the USA and Japan); support actions to channel efforts towards standardisation initiatives and a coherent approach towards take- up and testing of new concepts leading to a European-led Future Internet. Support to integrated satellite and terrestrial systems with a focus on supporting both public service and private communication requirements. Research roadmaps, organisation of scientific and/or policy events, strategy and policy formulation. Networks of Excellence in new and emerging topics, with a clear and limited focus, requiring interdisciplinary teams of researchers. Zürich, January 28, 2009 Torsten Braun: ERCIM WG eMobility Meeting 2

Expected impact Strengthened positioning of European industry in the field of Future Internet technologies and reinforced European leadership in mobile and wireless broadband systems optical networks cognitive network management technologies. Increased economic efficiency of access/transport infrastructures (cost/bit) Global standards, interoperability and European IPRs reflecting federated and coherent roadmaps. Wider market opportunities from new classes of applications taking advantage of convergence. Accelerated uptake of the next generation of network and service infrastructures. Zürich, January 28, 2009 Torsten Braun: ERCIM WG eMobility Meeting 3

Dates ICT call 5 - target outcomes a) and d): IP/STREP: EUR 71 million; of which a minimum of 50% to IPs and a minimum of 30% to STREPs NoE: EUR 6 million; CSA: EUR 3 million Zürich, January 28, 2009 Torsten Braun: ERCIM WG eMobility Meeting 4

FUME Abstract The ERCIM working group on eMobility performs and coordinates basic research on both mobile applications as well as the technical foundations required for these mobile applications, in particular wireless communication technologies, protocols, and middleware. The major goal of the support action is to define, develop, and shape a basic research roadmap in the area of FUture Mobile applications and Emerging wireless technologies. The roadmap shall influence future strategic decisions of several European stakeholders and organizations helping them to coordinate activities and to avoid overlap. The support action focuses explicitly on long-term (> 10 years) basic research and emphasizes the interdisciplinary approach of looking on both mobile applications and services on one side and emerging wireless communication technologies and protocols on the other side. The basic research roadmap will define and envisage developments in basic research in these areas. The roadmap will identify and evaluate the potential of new technology and application developments. This will be done without looking onto commercial constraints, but consider social and environmental interests. Special attention shall be given to disruptive technologies. Zürich, January 28, 2009 Torsten Braun: ERCIM WG eMobility Meeting 5

FUME Evaluation Scientific excellence: 2.5 (threshold 3.0) Progress beyond existing research agenda is not clarified. Work plan does not reveal not convincing strategy. Methodology of looking at todays problems is not convincing. Implementation & Management: 3.5 (threshold: 3.0) Insufficient experience in wireless communications Budget spread over many partners, not consistent with smaller group responsible for strategy development Conflict management Impact: 3.5 (threshold: 3.0) Vague about what actually is done. Total: 9.5 (threshold: 10.0) Zürich, January 28, 2009 Torsten Braun: ERCIM WG eMobility Meeting 6

Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) Support to activities aimed at coordinating or supporting research activities and policies (networking, exchanges, transnational access to research infrastructures, studies, conferences, etc). These actions may also be implemented by means other than calls for proposals. The Funding Scheme allows for two types of actions to be financed: a) Coordination or networking actions (CA) Coordinating or networking actions will always have to be carried out by a consortium of participants, normally three from three different countries. The coordination or networking actions cover the following activities: – the organisation of events - including conferences, meetings, workshops or seminars -, related studies, exchanges of personnel, exchange and dissemination of good practices, and, if necessary, the definition, organisation and management of joint or common initiatives together of course with management of the action. The coordination and networking actions normally stretches over a longer period. b) Specific support actions (SA)... The objective of specific support actions are to contribute to the implementation of the Framework Programmes and the preparation of future Community research and technological development policy or the development of synergies with other policies, or to stimulate, encourage and facilitate the participation of SMEs, civil society organisations and their networks, small research teams and newly developed or remote research centres in the activities of the thematic areas of the Cooperation programme, or for setting up of research intensive clusters across the EU regions...
