The mission of the Office of Safety and Security is to maintain a comprehensive safety and security program for the George Washington University. The Office of Health and Safety develops and promotes programs that provide for the continued health and safety of the students, faculty, staff and visitors to the George Washington University These programs are divided into two categories: Environmental and Occupational Health Health and Safety Inspections Office of Health and Safety (H&S)

Health & Safety Inspections What do inspectors look for during safety inspections? Prohibited Items Candles Flammable liquids Weapons Non-surge protected extension cords Cooking appliances in rooms without kitchens Fire Safety Devices Damaged and obstructed smoke detectors and sprinkler heads What happens if they find a prohibited item? Plug Locks Disable unapproved electrical devices $25 fine if not returned by move out Confiscation Returned to students if they agree to remove the item from campus Donated to relief organizations Office of Health and Safety conducts individual room inspections at least 3 times/year

What is Title IX? Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments Stipulates that no person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. It is enforced by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), U.S. Department of Education

What is Title IX? Who: Any University student or affiliate What: any gender related discrimination or harassment Where/When: any University owned or sponsored event, program, activity Why: Preserving environment that allows equal access to education How: Investigation, remediation, accommodations, education, prevention

Title IX and Sexual Harassment / Sexual Assault “If a school knows or reasonably should know about student-on-student harassment that creates a hostile environment, Title IX requires the school to take immediate action to eliminate the harassment, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects” Remember– Harassment includes all sexual violence NOTE: This applies to all members of and visitors to the university. It is more than “student on student.” Sexual Harassment, Violence, and Coercion are not tolerated at GW
