 Anne Radcliffe (English) began writing Gothic novels.  Formula: castle, somewhere in Italy(slam on Roman Catholics/pope), young girl fleeing from terror, appears manifestations of supernatural, grave yard scene, she gets captured, almost killed, pursued by good guy, at the end, the ghosts are proved to be fakes,  …sound familiar?
