Speakers Eric Brody - Principal, Shift Advantage -- “Why All This Indexing” Eric will share why companies are diving deep into using eco indexes to evaluate and score the environmental performance and impact of products, materials, packaging, supply chains, etc. We will be introduced to popular indices developed by non-profits, industry working groups, individual brands, and governments, such as the OIA Eco Working Group's Index, Climate Counts' Scorecard, MBDC's Cradle to Cradle, European Union's Flower and others. We will explore the various systems and approaches, challenges and benefits, using results for internal decision making versus external marketing/communication, and next steps after indexing. About the speaker: Eric has over a decade of experience successfully designing and implementing a wide range of strategies and initiatives on environmental scorecards, reporting, stakeholder development, raw material sourcing, factory code of conduct, product design, packaging, consumer education, media outreach and product recycling. Prior to launching Shift Advantage®, Eric spent 7 years as Sustainability Business Integration Manager for Nike and more recently 3 years as Sustainability Manager for Nau, a technical outdoor and urban clothing company recognized for its innovative sustainability practices. He has actively participated in leadership roles in many industry collaborative working groups, organizations and voluntary programs. Cheryl Millard-Nutt – Considered Materials Operations Manager, Nike, Inc. – “Nike’s Sustainability & Innovation Journey ~ A T-Shirt Can’t Change the World, but an Ethos Can” Cheryl will discuss Nike’s sustainable business model and practices and an insight to the development and scoring tool to meet Nike’s definitions of Considered Design. About the speaker: Cheryl Millard-Nutt is the Global Materials Operations Manager for Considered Design at Nike. Over the last sixteen years she has had the opportunity to hold various positions in the Nike Apparel Material Culture working within multiple global product categories. A highlight of this experience being her product and material development work with the Global Football category where she worked on Nike's first Body mapped game day jersey worn by Brazil in the 1998 World Cup. Her interest and involvement in environmentally preferred materials, (EPMs), elevated during her time working with both Nike category teams and material suppliers while managing the Nike Apparel Materials Library. Her current work in Nike's Considered Design supports Nike footwear, apparel and equipment strategies around integration of EPM materials into their category product. Jamie Bainbridge – Fabric and Product Development Director, Nau, Inc. – “The Roots of a Sustainable Business” Jamie will share Nau’s journey as a start-up as a forward-thinking sustainable business. At the very core of it’s foundation, sustainability is the driving force behind Nau’s existence since She will talk us through Nau’s beginning in 2006, surviving its bankruptcy, economic collapse, buyout and subsequent rebirth all within the first three years of the company. About the speaker: Jamie has held leadership roles in apparel product design and development for the last 25 years, working for companies that intrigued her because of the potential for innovation. Nike led her to Portland 20 years ago where, like everyone there, she held a variety of jobs, spending most of my time leading an advanced innovation group.. As the person responsible for Nau’s sustainable materials and product development, she’s involved with the newly-formed effort within the Outdoor Industry Association to develop a consumer product index helping companies learn about the real impact of the products they label as “green.”
