Preparing for a Job Interview
Presentation transcript:

Aussie Careers Guide STYLES of INTERVIEWS n All employers have their own approach to interviewing. n Be aware of the different types of interviews you may be confronted with. n Determine a positive approach to each.

Aussie Careers Guide THE PANEL INTERVIEW n More than one person interviews you at the same time. n Has the advantage that the decision about your future is not in the hands of one person. n Normal for government and large organizations to use this style.

Aussie Careers Guide INFORMAL INTERVIEW n Used for many casual positions. n Can accidentally happen when visiting a place of business or other people in your network of acquaintances. n Be prepared for the unexpected as it could be held on the “factory floor” whilst walking around.

Aussie Careers Guide FORMAL INTERVIEW n Is usually held in an office. n The questions are very structured. n You will be seated - so body language becomes important. n You must have documentation with you. n You will be “on your own”.

Aussie Careers Guide PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS n Some employers use analytical tests of –Physical and Mental Ability –Personality and Motivation n Employers use the results as a back-up to other selection procedures. n Try to “Be yourself” during these tests.

Aussie Careers Guide JOB SIMULATIONS n Large companies sometimes give you tasks to do in the actual work place. n Job applicants spend up to 2 days completing –Group discussions –Giving presentations –Doing “in-tray” or other exercises. –Panel interviews.

Aussie Careers Guide REMEMBER THAT …… n You are being interviewed every time you talk to someone who is in a position to hire you or is someone who can refer you to someone who can ! n So always conduct yourself in a “proper” manner and be polite.
