Background - 0 The VM system supports MANY O/S's It comes with a system named CMS When you login to VM, CMS automatically boots For Foreman's courses, you get a prompt asking for your choice of system

Background – software - 1 Accessing VM (2 non-GUI methods) 1.Via MTN3270 (alias: Mocha program) Command-line (text mode) interface Uses special hardware characters to position data –Echoed commands/responses not scrollable –Command input/output, NOT for running linux pgms 2.Via putty or SSH Command-line (text-mode) interface The special keys are OK (ctl, esc and alt) Echoed commands/responses ARE scrollable

Background – software - 2 Accessing your VM - GUI method –VM must already be running –VNCSERVER must be running too –Provides full GUI in a Window –Available from both Windows and Linux

Booting any virtual OS Log in to VM using MTN3270 client –Automatic profile allows selection of a VIRTUAL MACHINE (VM) –CMS is the default, –Set up by system admin –IF Linux is installed, Prompt allows allowing selection of CMS or Linux Then you get a Green on black menu Select your desired LINUX kernel

Procedures On-campus & Off campus

Logging in to VM from off-campus Open a browser Go to SSL.BINGHAMTON.EDU Click on the Network Connection –(starts the VPN tunnel) Login to the network –with PODS or BGM userid & pw Close the browser Network connection menu auto-closes Continue procedure as “on-campus” on next slide

Logging in to VM from on-campus Start a 3270 client –mtn3270 for Windows users –c3270 or x3270 for Linux users –Mtn3270 is downloadable from SSL.Binghamton.edu –MUST change the system connection Connect to BINGTJW.CC.BINGHAMTON.EDU Login as TJWnnn (your VM account) –Passwords, "nnn" are on the grade tracker Continued…

Boot Linux Login to VM (as previously discussed) Watch the text on the screen CAREFULLY –At the prompt, type a “1” to BOOT Linux and wait for the login prompt, then Type "#CP SET RUN ON", press “Enter” Type “#CP DISC” and press “Enter” Ignore the error message and Close the 3270 window Linux is now running You are done with the 3270 program Continued…
