 Discuss the following with a partner.  What do you need to do at the end of the period?  Where do I turn in/pick up work?  3 things about the culture in Wattsburg.

 Culture – All things that make up a peoples’ way of life.  We inherit culture from our parents and society

 The “heartlands” of major cultural groups.  Things like language, and religion spread out from this area of the world. ◦ In the beginning…  The Middle East  Mesoamerica (Central America)  West Africa

 Major cities  The internet  The United States

 Sketch a map of the World… create cultural regions and label them with a word or phrase that represents the cultural elements we see there.  Example: Labeling the area around Australia with the phrase “Boomerang factories”

Poor

 Sketch a map of the World… create cultural regions and label them with a word or phrase that represents the cultural elements we see there.  Example: Labeling the area around Australia with the phrase “Boomerang factories”

 We learn them from societal influences.  As a species we like to chunk our world into small groups. 1.Cognitively efficient – Once categorized there is no need to consider info about each individual. 2.Makes it easier to predict the social world. 3.Makes us feel better about ourselves.  We are think our group is better a.k.a “In-group favorability bias”

 With a partner discuss the following questions.  What is culture?  What is a cultural hearth?  How can stereotypes negatively impact relations between social groups?

 Norms are the agreed‐upon expectations and rules by which a culture guides the behavior of its members in any given situation. ◦ These vary widely across cultural groups.

 Body Language ◦ In our culture eye contact is seen as respectful ◦ In parts of Africa you only give eye contact to someone who is your equal. It is common for a visitor to avert their eyes while talking.  Greetings ◦ In the U.S smiling is appropriate when meeting strangers. It shows we are polite. ◦ In Russia it could be interpreted that you are mocking them are laughing at them.

 Social Behavior ◦ In the U.S it is the norm to sit quietly in a movie theatre or during a public performance. ◦ In Africa (seen also in African American communities) it is common to shout and make loud comments about the film.

 What is culture?  What is a cultural hearth?  Give an example of a modern day cultural hearth.  What are social norms?  How can stereotypes cause issues between social groups?

 Get a piece of paper.  Write down the question and then the answer.  Remain silent during the quiz.  Turn completed quizzes into the mesh.  Remain silent until all have finished.

 What is culture?  What is a cultural hearth?  Give an example of a modern day cultural hearth.  What are social norms?  How can stereotypes cause issues between social groups? * Remain silent until ALL have finished.

 Completed monthly  Turned in as a hard copy  Specific guidelines and worksheet are on the website.

 You sit at a computer.  The chairs are not a ride at Waldamere  You print ONLY what you need for the assignment.  Treat the machine with care.  Stay on task

 What is a cultural hearth?  What is your favorite tradition?  What is your least favorite tradition?

 The elements of culture are… ◦ Customs & traditions ◦ Language ◦ Arts and literature ◦ Religion ◦ Social organization

 1. A Cultures rules for behavior. ◦ Ex: Holidays, clothing, Marriage, etc. ◦ Graduation, Prom, Skip days

 2. Idioma ◦ El idioma es la piedra angular de la cultura. ◦ Sin el idioma, usted no podría comunicar la Cultura no podría ser pasada de la generación a la generación ◦ Usted puede tener muchos tipos diferentes del idioma

 Language is the cornerstone of culture  Without language, you couldn’t pass culture to the next generation.  You can have many different types of language… name a few.

 This can strengthen a culture’s identity – can make people feel proud  Includes art, music, books, etc.  Many different forms in a single society

Discuss with a partner Why would we consider language the “cornerstone” of culture? What are some art forms important to our Wattsburg culture?

 Religion answers questions about life  It can lead to conflict between people ◦ Monotheism – Belief in one God ◦ Polytheism – Belief in more than one god ◦ Can Science take the place of religion?

 This is how the people of an area organize itself to help its people meet its basic needs.  In all cultures, family is the most important.  What are some other forms of social organization in your life?

◦ Nuclear families – include a wife, husband, and children. (Industrial societies) ◦ Extended families – several generations living together. (Farming societies)

 Complete the worksheet individually.  Turn into the mesh.

 What are the 5 elements of culture?  How is the culture your parents grew up in different from the culture we live in today?

◦ Has been a major source of change over time ◦ Started with stone tools and continues with computers

2. Changing environment ◦ As the environment changes, we adapt. 3. New ideas ◦ The way we think about our culture will lead to change.  Example: The Protestant Reformation, 60’s sexual revolution…

Assimilation Acculturation Diffusion

 The movement of things and ideas from one culture to another. ◦ Occurs naturally ◦ Example: McDonalds in Asia, Beatles music in the U.S

 This happens when one culture replaces another on a larger scale. ◦ Example: Think of the Native Americans. They were forced to acculturate to the European norms.

 People of different backgrounds come to see themselves as part of the larger group.  To blend yourself into a new culture.

 While you watch this short clip think of this… “How is it difficult to assimilate to a new culture?”

 Read the first paragraph.  Discover the main point of the paragraph.  Highlight or underline any words or phrases that you feel support that main point.  When finished, share with your partner.  You have 2 min 30 sec  Share your findings with another group and decide among the 4 of you what the best main point is.

 Read paragraphs 2 and 3.  Do these support the initial main idea from the first paragraph? Why or why not?  Are there any new main ideas brought up?  Share your thoughts with your partner.  You have 2 min

 Read each paragraph.  In the chart provided write down the main ideas you uncover and the supporting facts for each.  Be prepared to discuss your ideas.

1. What is it about? 2. What feeling does it create? 3. Is it mainly positive, mainly negative, not sure.

 Process by which the experience of everyday life is becoming standardized around the world. (Due to the movement of goods and ideas)

 Which do you think is the most powerful force for culture change? (Technology, Climate, New Ideas, Interactions with other cultures)  Should we force immigrants to assimilate?  Is Globalization a good or bad thing?
