Ms. Chara 1/6/14 Cause & Effect organizational pattern

 1.)Today we will use this pattern to analyze the historical account of wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald and Gordon Lightfoot’s song and how to organize the information from both.

 Definition: Comparison and contrast are ways of looking at objects and thinking about how they are similar (alike) and different.  Compare and contrast is an important skill that we must learn to be good readers.

 How are _________ and __________ALIKE?  How is ___________ DIFFERENT from _____________?  How is ______________ both SIMILAR and DIFFERENT from ______________?  What is the DIFFERENCE between _____________ and ________________?  How is ____________ SIMILAR/DISSIMILAR to __________________?

 Steps we have already covered in this unit:  Determining the research question  Researching and sorting information  Developing a central thesis  Writing a rough and final draft  Peer editing

 We are now going to listen to the song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”  Listen to the song and be prepared to explain in 3 to 5 sentences to explain what the song is about.  7aw 7aw

 What do you think it is about?  Group discussion

 Lightfoot wrote Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald as a tribute to the ship, the sea, and the men who lost their lives that night. When asked recently what he thought his most significant contribution to music was, he said it was this song, which he often refers to as "The Wreck". In spite of its unlikely subject matter, the song climbed to #2 on the Billboard pop charts and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald remains one the most stirring topical ballads ever written and a highlight of every Lightfoot concert.

+ In order to compare and contrast, we are now going to read the Newsweek article on the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Underline/take notes on the major facts in the article and the 5 W’s: Who, What, Where, When, Why? +Fill in the graphic organizer in groups of three, comparing the similarities and the differences between the music video(lyrics) and the Newsweek article.
