English 9 OCTOBER 28TH, 2013 BELLWORK: SENTENCE PATTERN 1-4 BRAINSTORM FREEWRITE OUTLINE HOMEWORK: HANDWRITE A 5 PARAGRAPH ROUGH DRAFT

DO NOT TALK: Detentions Issued for Talking. No exceptions Instructions:  Use Sentence Patterns 1-4 to discuss your weekend, Halloween, the month of October, or any topic of interest. Tips  Active verbs for 1 & 2, Linking Verbs for 3 & 4  Noun: person, place, thing, idea.  Pronouns: Stand in place of a noun: he, she, they, you, etc.  Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns. They may come before the word they describe (That is a cute puppy.) or they may follow the word they describe (That puppy is cute.).  Write using as many of the four patterns as possible. After about five minutes

Speeches over The Help  5 th Hour: Logan Landes  7 th Hour: Tanner & Gustavo

Short Story Unit Short Story Unit Evaluation Goals  Formative Test #2: Narration and Symbolism & Irony (Reading 25 points) This will be tomorrow!  Summative Test: Read selection from the book and take test over selection (50points)  Write a literary analysis of two pages over any of the short stories we read in class. (Writing 100 points)

Freewriting  Using the branches you made brainstorming with clusters, write for 5-10 minutes about your topic. Feel free to use quoted from the book, or to just argue what you think and why.  Example: I think that the sentences create suspense because they slow down the reading pace. For instance, when Rainsford is in the tree, Connell uses a lot of simple sentences and piles them on top of each other. If Rainsford is discovered here, he will be shot. At any moment, the general might see him and kill him. The stakes are high. Thus, slowing down the sentences makes the reader worried for longer. And the inner turmoil Rainsford feels is transferred to us. This use of sentence structure builds suspense in the reader.

Thesis: Brainstorming  Put your thesis in middle circle.  What are three ways you can argue this thesis?  For example, if my thesis was “suspense is built in “The Most Dangerous Game” through sentence structure (tone/voice),” I might use the moment when Zaroff leaves him in the tree, the repetition of Rainsford’s thoughts while being hunted, and the ending confrontation in the bedroom.

Now Outline Introduction  Attention Getting Opening  Quick Synopsis  Thesis Body  Subtopic #1  Quote w/Page Citation  Subtopic #2  Quote w/Page Citation  Subtopic #3  Quote w/Page Citation Conclusion  Restate Thesis & Subtopic  Brief Significance  Subtopic #1: When Zaroff almost spots Rainsford in the tree, Connell uses short simple sentences to make the reader feel the suspense that Rainsford feels.  “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed”

3-X Paragraph Realized  When Zaroff almost spots Rainsford in the tree, Connell uses short simple sentences to make the reader feel the suspense that Rainsford feels.  “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed” (33).  (1) If Rainsford is discovered here, he will be shot. At any moment, the general might see him and kill him. The stakes are high.(2) Like the general’s, the readers eyes slow down and take in these sentences at a different pace because there is more punctuation. Thus, slowing down the sentences makes the reader worried for longer. And the inner turmoil Rainsford feels is transferred to us. (3) Connell’s use of sentence structure is a powerful tool he uses to make his story more suspenseful, and thus, more readerable.

Write A Rough Draft in Pencil/Pen  Why write in pencil/pen?  When you are forced to rewrite something entirely, many times you edit your sentences and grammar. Also, you tend to build and develop your argument. HOMEWORK: Your homework is to have a 5 paragraph rough draft on your paper by tomorrow. Please bring tomorrow for 5 point of your overall essay grade.

Literary Analysis  Choose any story we’ve read:  “The Sniper”  “The Most Dangerous Game”  “Harrison Bergeron”  “Old Man at the Bridge”  “Thank You, Ma’am”  “In the Family”  “The Interlopers”  “Peter and Rosa”  “The Necklace”

Homework  Pick which story you want to do.  Reread it.  Come up with a thesis that covers a literary element in the story and the effect that literary element has on the story overall.  Bring thesis statements on Monday.
