2015 Summer FPAW ATM-Weather Integration (AWI) Session AUGUST 25, :00 – 5:00 P.M. NTSB AUDITORIUM

Energize ATM-Weather Integration (AWI) o Rekindle Don Berchoff’s Summer 2014 FPAW passion Employ characteristics of “TED” talks o Tell a story, minimize techno-detail anesthesia o Despite our efforts, the presentations may be more like “FRED” talks (Full of Research Engineering and Development) Engage the audience o Limit the number of presentations o Lots of Q&A and group discussion opportunities Exchange information o Between Atmospheric Scientists, ATM DST Developers and ATM Decision-Makers Session Goals

Agenda – Part 1 Part 1 ATM-Weather Integration (AWI) Status (Getting AWI Off the Starting Blocks) 1:15-1:20Agenda and MotivationMatt Fronzak / MITRE CAASD 1:20-1:35NSIP AWI Gap AnalysisClaudia McKnight / MITRE CAASD 1:35-1:45Open Discussion: Why We Need to Get AWI Right, and Right Now Everette Whitfield / FAA Part 2 AWI Challenges and Lessons Learned (It’s Not a Dash, It’s a 5000M Relay – with Hurdles) 1:45-2:00AWI Trail Blazers – Challenges They Have FacedMike Robinson / AvMet Applications 2:00-2:20GPSM – Lessons LearnedChris Provan / Mosaic ATM 2:20-2:40Open Discussion: What Do We Need to Do to Successfully Roll Out an AWI Solution? Danny Sims / FAA 2:40-2:55Break

Agenda – Part 2 Part 3 Future AWI Providers and Consumers (Who Are Teammates, and What’s the Handoff Technique?) 2:55-3:15Common Support Services – Weather (CSS-Wx)Wil Brown / FAA 3:15-3:35Flow Contingency ManagementChristine Taylor / MITRE CAASD Part 4 Defining AWI Success (How Do We Know If We’ve Won?) 3:35-3:55Validating Weather Requirements for TFM Decision-Making Chris Ermatinger /FAA 3:55-4:15Weather-TFM Post-Analysis and FeedbackMike Robinson 4:15-4:45Panel and Open Discussion: Mapping Weather Forecast Needs and Opportunities  What Kind of Integrated Weather Support Does the ATM Operation Need  What Kind of Weather Support can Aviation Weather Community Deliver? Matt Fronzak Mike Robinson

It’s All About Perseverance It seems like when I first started exploring the concept of ATM- Weather Integration, I looked like…

It’s All About Perseverance I’m pretty sure that when John McCarthy first began working the topic, he looked like…

It’s All About Perseverance But if you think that’s a long time, here’s what Bruce Carmichael looked like when he first began trying to integrate weather into ATM DSTs and processes…

The Point Is… We have been at it for a long time (15+ years)! There are reasons why… We are getting (relatively) close… o Numerous ATM-Weather Integration-related efforts are expected to come to fruition between …but we are at a critical juncture o Funding decisions for many of those efforts will be taking place in the next few years We need to keep pressing!
