Parent Involvement and the FSL

What is Parent Involvement? The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) law defines parental involvement as, “the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities including: Assisting their child’s learning; Being actively involved in their child’s education at school; Serving as full partners in their child’s education and being included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child; and The carrying out of other activities such as those described in section 1118 of the ESEA Section 9101(32).

What the RESEARCH says…. When parents are involved students have: Higher grades, test scores, graduation rates Better school attendance Increased motivation, self-esteem Social competence Aspiration for college Lower rates of suspension Decreased use of drugs and alcohol Fewer instances of violent behavior (Parent Teacher Association) (Harvard Family Research Project)

What is an FSL? FSL stands for Family /School Liaison.

Duties of the FSL Serve as liaison between school personnel, parents and community agencies Maintain active communication with parents Manage Parent Resource Center Perform parent outreach Plan and implement parent involvement programs Coordinate parent involvement activities with school, parents and other departments Assist with “Take Home Technology” Assist students and their families Conduct home and school visits Refer parents and children to appropriate community agencies Prepare official parent documents Prepare and maintain narrative documentation and record keeping Conduct community outreach Provide interpretation via telephone and parent conferences

How can I help? Suggestions: Gather resources for parent check-out to assist their child at home – Teacher Prescription Pad (TPP) Call parents when teacher has not been able to make contact Refer parents to appropriate community agencies Check-out “Take Home Technology” to parents Conduct community outreach Provide support and tools to help parents create a learning environment at home

Visit the Parent Resource Center to preview the resources available for parent check-out Complete the Teacher Prescription Pad (be specific about the needs of the student and items needed) Refer parents to the center before or after meetings Include information about the Parent Resource Center in your class newsletter

What is a PRC? PRC stands for Parent Resource Center. The Parent Resource Center provides a place where parents can find a variety of resources, materials, workshops, trainings, and activities to help them bridge the gap between parent, school and student.
