R&D system in Lithuania: facts and figures 160 000 students 23 universities: 14 state, 9 private 24 colleges: 13 state, 11 private 12 state research institutes 17 300 researchers, 7 800 with PhDs 300 – 400 new doctoral degrees each year 9.7 % researchers in business and industry 0,92 % of GDP Investments in R&D 6th in the EU for language knowledge – half of the population speaks at least 2 foreign languages Labour productivity in R&D sector is 4.7 times higher than the overall economy’s labour productivity 2nd innovation growth leader according to Innovation Union Scoreboard 2012

National integrated programmes – for knowledge-intensive sectors National integrated programmes include: development of study programmes training and mobility of scientists and other researchers improvement of common science and studies infrastructure 12 R&D intensive sectors of economy: Biotechnology and Biopharmacy; Joint Laser, New Materials, Electronics, Nanotechnology and Applied Physical Sciences and Technologies; Sustainable Chemistry; IT sector; Medicine sciences; Sustainable use of nature environment; Mechatronics; Development of Civil Engineering Sector and Transport; Lithuanian Creative and Cultural Industries; Humanities and Social Sciences; Maritime sector; Agriculture, Forestry and Food sector.
