 Hi! I’m Phil Keoghan, host of the AMAZING RACE!  Today, your class will participate in an interactive PowerPoint race around the world!

 We will be travelling to various heritage sites around the world.  WHAT IS A HERITAGE SITE?  A property, area, or landscape that : 1. represents a specific period in history 2. a society wants to preserve for future generations.

 The race will begin in Montreal and move around the world until we reach our final secret destination.  You will be working in teams to complete tasks along the way.

 Your group must choose a team name.  After each task is complete, you will send one team member up to the front with the answer.  The first group to get the correct answer will receive 5 points, the second will receive 4 and the third will receive 3.  The team with the most points at the end of the race will win.

 Travel to the capital city of Quebec...  Once there, find the castle that overlooks the water for your next clue.

 Use your textbook to find the name of the castle that overlooks the water.  Write the name on a sheet of paper  Once you find the name, find the date it was built.  Was it really a castle?  What was the building used for?

 Task 1:  The co-ordinates of Quebec City are 47N, 71W  Task 2:  The founder of Quebec City was Samuel de Champlain and the city was founded in 1608.

 Heritage cities must integrate the old with the new.  Use your textbook to find an example of a building in Quebec City that has done this.  Hint: the building is similar to the one we’re now, but much older.

 One of North America’s oldest schools.  Founded in 1639 by two French nuns.  Still operates today as a girl’s private elementary school.  The Marie-Guyart wing, which houses classrooms and a gym, was built much later.  The stone exterior, the shape of the roof and style of the windows was created to look just like the original structure.

 Use your textbook to find 3 positive and 3 negative aspects of living in a Heritage city like Quebec.  You must complete this task to receive your next clue.

POSITIVE  Beautiful place to live.  Close to many stores and restaurants.  Higher education and job opportunities.  Great for pedestrians, bicyclists. NEGATIVE  Many tour buses.  Lack of parking.  Lots of traffic.  Difficult to get around by car.  Noise.

 You must make your way to an ancient city in Europe, which is home to Gods and Goddesses like Zeus and Hera.

 Find the site known as the “sacred rock”.  What is this sites’ name?  What temple is built on this site?  To which God/Goddess is it dedicated?  What other heritage sites are located in this area?

 The Acropolis is located on a rocky hill, 156 metres high.  The Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena, is located on this site.  The Propylaea, Erechtheum, the temple of Athena Nike, and the Agora are also located here.

 List the natural disasters that have had an affect on the heritage sites in Athens.  What man-made factors have also contributed to the destruction of these sites?

 You must make your way to another ancient city, where rice is an important food and a Forbidden city still stands.

 Why is this area in Beijing called the Forbidden City?  Are people allowed to visit it?

 It is called the Forbidden City because it was reserved for emperor, his family and the people who worked for him.  Yes, people are allowed to visit it. It was opened to the public in 1924.

Find the co-ordinates for the city of Beijing, as well as the population, languages and religions. OR 2. Find out how long it took for the Forbidden city to be built. How many emperors have lived there?

1. The co-ordinates of Beijing are 40N, 116E 2. The Forbidden city took 14 years to build and 24 Chinese emperors have lived there.

 You must make your way to the city where wine, cheese, and baguettes are plentiful and the people speak a familiar language.

 Find the name of the museum that has a triangular structure as its main entrance.  List 3 facts about this museum.

 The world’s biggest museum with over 35,000 works of art.  The building was first created in 1793 as a royal palace.  Original construction began in  The triangular glass entrance was opened in 1989.

 Not all historic sites can be easily protected from pollution.  Use your textbook to find 3 ways in which people have tried to protect these structures.  Which of the three ways is less costly and more effective?  On which historic monuments have these methods been used?

 Three methods used to protect structures include: micro-sanding, laser, lime bacteria.  Lime bacteria are simply sprayed onto the monuments to protect them in the least costly and most effective way.  The Louvre was cleaned in 1995 for a total cost of $6.4 million.  The Notre-Dame Cathedral was also cleaned using the lime-producing bacteria method.

 You must make your way to the ancient city where the Gladiators are from.

 Find the name of the building in ancient Rome that looks like a modern day stadium.  When was this structure built?  What was is used for?

 Built between 72 and 80 CE  The most famous symbol of ancient Rome.  Could seat over 50,000 spectators.  Was used to host fights between gladiators and wild animals.

 The population of Rome is 2.7 million in the metropolitan area. About 14.1 million tourists visit Rome each year.  The co-ordinates of the city of Rome are 42N, 13E

 Your final clue sends you back home in a race for the finish line.

 Find the name of Quebec’s largest English speaking public High School.  Once you’ve found it, find Ms. Caron’s classroom.  Send one member from each group on a search around the class to find a small photo of one of the heritage sites we have seen today.  There are 12 scattered around the class.

 The group with the most pictures at the end will win 20 points! You have to be able to name the historic site once you have found the pictures!  ON YOUR MARK.....GET SET......
