My name is PHILIP PROGER, I was born in 1585 and I am the son of WILLIAM PROGER who was Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire in the 1588 Parliament. I have one brother, his name is DAVID PROGER. My family are important in Monmouthshire. Some of my family are Roman Catholic while others remain Anglican. My family has two seats – Gwern-vale near Crickhowell and Wern-ddu. My wife is MARY BRIGHTMER of Caistor St Edmund, Norfolk. Together we have four sons - HENRY, VALENTINE, JAMES AND EDWARD. They are all passionate Royalists and Roman Catholics.. I have been an equerry to James I. This means that I was a personal attendant to the King and I was also involved with the supervision of the horses belonging to a royal household. I have since become groom of the Privy Chamber. I am very proud of my Welsh heritage. Philip’s life came to an end in He was in Oxford supporting the Royalist cause.

This picture is the earliest-known portrait of a Welshman holding a leek. At the Tudor and Stuart courts the Sovereign and courtiers wore leeks on Saint David's Day. James I commented on this practice 'that the wearing of leeks on Saint David's Day by Welshmen was a good and commendable fashion... the Welshmen in commemoration of the great fight of the black Prince of Wales, do wear leeks as their chosen ensign'.
