Building a New Home

1. What did colonists do when they first arrived? Colonists put up tents Prepared the land for planting Cut down trees to build permanent homes

2. Four Things that Oglethorpe Accomplished Accomplishments Got grants of land Made treaties with Native Americans Built a small fort Designed the city of Savannah Authority No title Limited power

3. How was Savannah designed? Named after the nearby Savannah River Trees had to be cleared for farmland and living space The settlement would be laid out in a series of squares, making a grid pattern Each “public” square was the center of a neighborhood 21 of the 24 squares remain today

17. What Happened to Oglethorpe? 1743 Oglethorpe is called back to England to defend himself. Spent $100,000 pounds of his own money defending himself Never returns to Georgia He married at age 48 and slowly gave up his Trustee duties
