So you’ve decided to join the electronic revolution and want people to know who you are, where you are and what you do. Before you start, you need to think about a few things. b Where do I start? b Who is going to make this happen? b What do you want to say? b When will this happen? b Why is this important? b How am I going to do this?

Where do I start? b You already have! b You’re here and it isn’t scary! scary b It’s not rocket science!

“When you put those first few lines of HTML in a file and then look at them in your browser, you'll feel like you can conquer the world!" Who? You !

What do you want to say? b Name b Address b Telephone b Fax b b ARIEL Address b Policies b Logo Example Example

When will this happen? b Today b Tomorrow b Anytime you have time

Why is this important? b People are relying more and more on the internet to provide them with information. b Your organization provides information. b Costs continue to increase for advertising, phone listings, and funding. b A WWW page is available to anybody who wants to know how to contact you. They can find your information quickly and easily.

What is involved? b A page that is written in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) b Publishing your page to an internet site. b Updating your information. b Creating new pages or modifying old ones.

How do I find an internet host? b First you need a computer with a modem and a connection to the internet. Most libraries have one available for no charge. b Many people already have a computer at home with an internet connection. b Surf the internet for “discount ISP” or “Low cost web hosting” add the word “compare” to find out what you get for what you pay.

Getting an Address b Each computer on the internet has an address similar to a house’s street address. b The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) assigns and deletes the addresses. b You must subscribe for your own address or use someone else's address.

Subscribing organizations b All addresses are numeric. Domain name addresses are converted to numeric (IP addresses) by “trunk” servers. b Organizations are contracted to assign addresses.com,.org,.edu, etc. are handled by middlemen. These organizations charge various amounts so shopping around can lower costs.

How Much Does it Cost? b Cost depends on how you want to set up your WWW site. b It can be free (only our time) b It can be very expensive, thousands of dollars per year, to set up and maintain an organizational site. Requiring hardware, software, staff and maintenance.

The Easy Way b First view other libraries pages. b If you find one you like, you can use it for a template using the source code. b Using Netscape, Click on View and then Page Source. b Using Internet Explorer, Click on View and then Source.

Copy and Paste b Open a word processor like Word Pad or Microsoft Word. b Highlight the HTML code using the mouse “click and drag” method. b to copy the text from the source. b to paste into your word processor.

So, now what do I do? 1. Find out if your web server is set up to handle CGI scripts bIf not, find out if the IS/IT staff can/will do it. bIf so, design a page and a form. 2.
