DA Form 6 Duty Roster Today’s class is on the DA Form 6. As leader’s it is important that we know and understand how this form works for several reasons. 1- In order to properly distribute work details and taskings. 2- In order to ensure that our subordinates are not being over tasked 3- To be able to properly identify when our leaders are not managing their DA Form 6 correctly.

REFERENCES AR 220-45 Duty Roster dtd 15 Nov 1975 Although this reference is more than 20 years old it is still applicable today. The previous publication was dated 1965.

PURPOSE Duty rosters are kept for recording the duty performed by each person in an organization in order to make an equitable determination of duty assignments. A separate roster generally will be maintained for each duty requiring the detail of individuals. Equitable means that everyone is pulling their share of duty equally. What different rosters are maintained at the company level? What rosters can leaders maintain at the platoon and section level?

PREPARATION & MAINTENANCE Duty rosters will contain the names of only those persons required to perform the duty involved. When a new duty roster is prepared, all names will be entered alphabetically within pay grade, beginning with the highest pay grade and using appropriate grade of rank. Subsequent names will be added at the foot of the roster. A person’s name may be omitted or deleted from any duty roster whenever he/she is excused from or not qualified to perform the duty concerned. When the roster is created, the roster will be made by rank senior to junior and then in alphabetical order. Any additions will be added to the bottom of the roster. Once a Soldier is permanently exempted from the roster or no longer eligible to pull that duty they will be removed from the roster. When would this apply? -Soldiers who get promoted or demoted -Soldiers who PCS -Assigned to positions which exempt them from duty.

DETAILS FROM DUTY ROSTERS Generally, the person longest off the duty will be the next person detailed. When such person is not available, the person on the roster who is next longest off that duty will be detailed. Whenever a person who has been detailed for a duty is unable to enter upon or complete the duty, the next person eligible on the applicable duty roster who is available will be detailed to perform or complete the duty. Will be further explained on the next slide.

POSTING THE DUTY ROSTER A duty roster is posted only for those days on which a detail is selected. The procedures described below will be used on all duty rosters. When a detail is made from a roster, all other persons on that roster will be charged on that day with the number of such details missed since the last time they were detailed, excluding any nonchargeable days. Whenever the duty roster is posted, the abbreviations below will be used to indicate those not available for detail. No other abbreviations are authorized. Those who are absent or otherwise not available because of leave, pass, special duty, temporary duty, illness in line of duty, or any other authorized reason not due to misconduct will be indicated by the letter “A.” TDY travel that does not extend beyond regular duty hours will not normally qualify an individual for an “A.” Those eligible for detail who could not be selected because of previous detail or other duty will be indicated by the letter “D.” Those not available because of being absent without leave, in arrest, in confinement, sick not in line of duty, or otherwise not available as a result of their own misconduct will be indicated by the letter “U.” Wherever the abbreviation “A” is used, the numbering sequence of days will be interrupted. Wherever the abbreviations “D” & “U” are used, the numbering sequence will continue and the appropriate number will be included with the abbreviation. Only authorized codes on the duty roster are A, U, & D. When is each used? I have a Soldier going on leave OCONUS? I have a Soldier who is TDY. The Soldier is assigned to 244th QM BN and is taking the Functional PBUSE Course. I have a Soldier who was in a car accident and had been drinking. Soldier was hospitalized for 2 weeks. In The Line of Duty-No. I have a Soldier who is TDY for three days to Maryland for the Hazmat Course? I have a Drill SGT who is duty drill for Thursday and will be on recovery on Friday? I have a Soldier on Burial Honors? I have a Soldier on CAO duty?

EXAMPLE SFC Jones is on leave 3-8 July. SFC Landis is TDY Local 12 – 18 July (ALMC Course) SGT Quinn was AWOL 9 – 13 July

WEEKENDS & HOLIDAYS Consolidated weekday-weekend-holiday duty rosters will be maintained whenever practicable. Meaning both weekday and weekend rosters are maintained on 1 roster instead of 2 different rosters.

DETAILS FROM UNITS Whenever practicable, details from units will be formed by taking units in turn according to one roster (DA Form 6 may be used by listing unit designations in the place of individual names). When not practicable, a commander may devise his own method of assigning details to units. Appendix B, FM 22–6 gives examples of some methods that may be employed. However, it is emphasized that commanders may use whatever system best meets their needs as long as equity is maintained. AR 220-45 allows us to modify this roster to use it to designate section, platoon, company and other sized element details. It also gives us the latitude to use other means of equitable distribution of duty as long as it is in keeping with the guidelines of this and other Army Regulations.

EXAMPLE

CONSOLIDATED ROSTER Where consolidated rosters are maintained the following will apply: Entries for weekends and holidays, as well as entries for weekdays, will be posted on the same roster. Separate numbering sequences may be established. The weekend-holiday periods may be indicated by a system of vertical red lines, as indicated by heavy lines in figure 1, or by entering the dates, numbers, and diagonal lines, indicating performance of duty on those dates, in red to identify or separate the weekend-holiday periods from the weekday postings. Weekends must be distinguished from weekdays.
