New York Colony Founded: 1624 Founded by Dutch West India Company By: Emersyn and Shane

Colony’s First People Iroquois Tribe were already living in New York, before the colonists came. Many Iroquois shared the same language. The tribe got food from hunting, farming, and fishing. The tribe planted corn, beans, and squash. Women owned property, and chose the tribal leaders. The tribe also traded with Europeans. By the late 1700’s, many Iroquois moved out of New York.

Early Settlers Hudson’s ship landed at New York. The Dutch claimed New York. The Dutch started building trading posts and villages. The early settlers were the Dutch, French, German, English, and Swedish. The first settlements were Fort Orange, and New Amsterdam. The Dutch created a colony called New Netherland. The Dutch rule did not last that long.In1664, England took over the colony. But, the English let the Dutch stay.

Life in The New York Colony In New York, they had slaves. The slaves worked in and on farms and rich households. On farms everyone could worked. Children milked cows, and collected eggs. New York was full of businesses. Boys worked in fields with their dad.

Life in The New York Colony Colonists made wooden barrels, leather boots, brewed beer, and baked bread. Children spent little time in school. But, in time more children went to school and learned how to read. New York was full of businesses.

Work and Trade Farmers made extra food for the market. Colonists traded eggs, milk, and grain. Farmers also exchanged bushels of wheat, dried meat, and salted pork. Many colonists became rich for trading fur.

Colony’s Exports The agriculture exports in New York, were cattle, horses, and wheat. The industrial exports in New York, were iron, and ships. The natural resource exports in New York, were fur, and timber.

Religion In New York they had religious freedom. Since, New York had religious freedom, many people settled in New York, and built their own towns. In 1730, Jewish colonists built their first building to pray in. Jewish and Catholic people were the major religions in New York.

Community  In New York, they valued that people should speech the truth, so they made freedom of speech. In 1735, John Peter Zenger went to jail for writing papers about the governor in the newspaper. Most children didn’t spend time in school, but in time most colonists learned how to read.

Becoming A State During the 1600’s, France became interested in claiming land in northern New York. Great Britain and France began to fight over New York. Great Britain won against France in In the start of the war Great Britain took control of New York. In 1776, Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. After the U.S.A. won, the American states formed a much stronger national government.

Statehood In 1788, New York approved the Constitution of the U.S.A. New York was the 11 th state to gain statehood.

Fun Facts New York was located in the Middle colony. New York was named after The Duke of York. The population in New York was 168,007 people in The Early Settlers were New Netherlands and the Dutch. Some fun facts are all the different religions in the New York Colony are Catholic, Church of England, Dutch Reformed, French, Huguenot, Jewish, and Protestant. New York’s first settlement was Fort Orange.
