Computer/Technology/Cell Phone Usage With a partner, talk about the following things:  How many hours a day do you spend using a cell phone, the computer, iPod, MP3 player?  Can you imagine living without using these things? Why or why not?

“Crazy for Cell Phones” Worksheet  Vocabulary link  Pair work. Write your answers to the questions. Then interview your partner.

Reading- “Cell Phone Usage” Pre-reading questions: Would you ever take or make a cell phone in a classroom? While driving? In a theater? In a restaurant? Have you ever made calls in those places? Do you think there should be laws about cell phone usage?

Infinitives and Gerunds You can use infinitives and gerunds in order to describe uses and purposes. Infinitives= To play, to send, to pay Gerunds= Playing,Sending, Paying (Gerunds make verbs into nouns+ ing)

I need one to make phone calls and play games.”) 2-Mrs. Logan (“I can’t relax unless Evan has a phone. I want to be able to reach Evan if I have to.”) 3-Mr. Logan (“Why does a 12-year-old need a cell phone? He’s a kid! He should be playing, not making phone calls.”) 4-Evan’s doctor (“Cell phones are convenient, but it may not be safe for Evan to use it a lot.”)

Pronunciation: Syllable Stress  Listen and practice. Notice which syllable has the main stress.  Where is the stress in these words? Add them to the columns in part A. Then listen and check.

Listening-World of Computers  In a computer company, what skills and qualifications would be needed in different positions within the company?  What kinds of questions do you think would be asked in a job interview for such positions?

Listening-World of Computers  What was Mr. Taylor’s previous job?  What does Mr. Taylor think Java is?  What does the interviewer mean when he says “We’ll be in touch” at the end of the conversation?  How would you describe Mr. Taylor: “on the ball”, high achiever, uninformed?

Computer Problems  What are some problems that people can encounter when they are using a computer?  What can cause those problems?  When you encounter those problems, what do you do? Seek help from a friend, fix it yourself, take it to a computer store?

Imperatives and Infinitives for giving suggestions When you want to give a suggestion, you can use an imperative or an infinitive to give suggestions. Be sure to turn it on. Don’t forget to dial the area code. Make sure to hit the “end” button. Remember to pay the bill every month. Try not to talk for too long.

I have a problem with my laptop! My computer keeps crashing. What should I do?

Listening- “Computer Sales” Vocabulary  What does the word “queue” mean?  Find a phrase in the conversation that means “Can I help you?”  What does “freeze” mean when the caller said “the thing always freezes”?  What does “I’m at [my] wit’s end” mean?  What does “holding you hostage” mean? (“If your computer is holding you hostage”)  What does “hiccup” mean? (“Why buy a computer that hiccups every time…?”)
