Update your Life Webs Table of Contents l Dragonfly Pond l Biodiversity l Dr. Art’s Guide to the Web l Structure and Function l Engineering Bridges l Personal Life Web l Endangered Species Project l If Only l The Big Three Again l Species Relationships (today)

Objective: l In a small team, I will teach a 7 th grader about species relationship vocabulary by writing and acting out a creative drama.

Announcements l Roller Coaster presentations – come to my AG tomorrow. l Dance of the Food Chain – tomorrow after school l Active List for Summer Field Trip still open…

Species Relationships How species get along

For any two different critters, they l Get along well - good buddies! l Don’t really care - apathetic l Go at it - enemies l There are other possibilities

1) Predation l The big, bad PREADATOR l They get to eat the PREY l Usually the prey is not too happy. l When one animal consumes and receives its energy from another living animal.

2) Parasitism l A relationship that is bad for one organism and good for another. l Is it different than PREDATION? l Yes! The other critter is not killed

1 billion people plus on the planet have round worms in the intestines

3) Mutualism l A relationship between species that is beneficial for both. l Birds cleaning out the teeth of alligators l Alligator gets a free flossing l Bird gets a meal

What does the bee get? What does the flower get? What do these two critters get out of the relationship?

4) Commensalism l A relationship between species that is helpful for one. l The other species is neither helped nor harmed.

Another example l See the shrimp on top? l Who benefits - the shrimp or the slug? l How? l Is the other one hurt?

Another example l The tiger kills the prey. l He/she eats. l The vulture gets to clean up afterward. l Does not affect the lion one way or the other.

Another Factor: Competition l Organisms competing for a LIMITED RESOURCE l Like food l water l space

What are these two bad boys COMPETING OVER?

The activity l You will be assigned a small group. l With your group, write and perform a play demonstrating your knowledge of the relationship words.

Using ALL of the words listed below: l Predation l Prey l Predator l Competition l Mutualism l Parasitism l Commensalism

If this is helpful... l Brainstorm ideas for the play - like at school, sporting event, in the jungle, whatever. l Pick one idea l Decide on parts l Write your script l Practice

Creativity is always important l Do not bore your audience l Have fun l Brainstorm some creative “touches” l Acting does not always involve speaking

Order of Operations l Find Team l Have “Theme” Approved l Write Script in notebook with “Extras” l Have script approved l Practice and perform – l Skits will be seen on Thursday…

Alternate Activity l Working alone, compose a 1000 plus word essay that is creative and clearly demonstrates knowledge of our vocabulary. l Include a few pictures. l Highlight the concepts somehow in this creative story.

What were those words again? l Predation l Prey l Predator l Competition l Mutualism l Parasitism l Commensalism
