TODAY’S AGENDA Assignment questions Preparing for Balcarras students - choose groups and dates - group time to plan Jan. 17 and 24 What is in a philosophy? Writing an opening letter of application.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS Are there any questions on your mind about your assignments? Are there any questions about the way you are being marked? Refer to assignment description and rubrics to make sure you are on track. Ask as you go. Be reassured I will guide you.

PREPARING FOR BALCARRAS -We need to divide into two groups - a group that will teach the music lessons and a group that will teach the dance lessons. -Within your group you need to divide into three groups and assign which week your group will teach -Look at the curriculum to choose an outcome your group will focus on. As a large group talk about how your three lessons might flow and connect. -Jan. 17 and 24 th classes – preparing time

LESSON PLANS EXPECTATIONS -Outcome -indicator -Set, Development, Closure Describe your lesson in detail. Feel free to include phrases you intend to use, organization details and who is going to teach what part. *Avoid vague phrases like “discuss….” Describe how. Hand in your lesson to me at the beginning of class. Of course, we want to make these lessons active. Pay attention to classroom management strategies and ideas for keeping students engaged. After you have taught your lesson you can write your reflection anytime and hand it in. All reflections are due on Feb. 26 th. Look at the questions I want you to answer.

GET INTO YOUR GROUPS -Choose which group you want to be a part of -Divide into three groups within that group -Choose a date to teach -Record on the sign up sheet at the front -We will work next class to look at the curriculum and choose an outcome. -Anyone willing/interested in helping greet students at beginning, showing them where to go? We would also like to offer university tours to some places on campus after. They are here from 10:45 – 2:00.

WHAT’S IN A PHILOSOPHY? Let’s begin with where you come from? Who are our….  Dancers?  Musicians?  Artists?  Actors?  Other art forms?

YOUR GIFTS **How do you share your gifts? **How do you explore your gifts? **How do you challenge yourself to learn more about other art forms?

LOOKING FOR GIFTS IN KIDS Landon Rules

LET’S NOW THINK ABOUT … What Arts experiences do schools face…  That are challenging?  That are inspiring?  That are stereotyping? Share…

WHAT WERE YOUR OUTSIDE INFLUENCES TALK AT YOUR TABLES ABOUT THESE QUESTIONS. What were the major influences in your life (in the arts) outside of school? Who were your heroes in the arts? What opportunities are there in our community to get involved in the arts? What were the stereotypes present in your community? Are they still there today? Share…

LOOK AT THE KEY POINTS Identify personal strengths and talents – include background and influences growing up Discuss the elements of what makes an effective Arts Ed. program Clearly link classroom strategies and curricular objectives i.e. Inquiry learning to drama improv approach Holistic approach to teach the four components Specific ideas are present to creating positive attitudes in the community i.e. Developing an extra curricular support Organizing an assembly where the symphony performs *Include statements that have…. “I believe” “It is important”

STRONG STATEMENTS IN A PHILOSOPHY “WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ABOUT WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS TEACHERS NEED FOR TODAY’S CLASSROOM?” Teachers develop their own individual styles. However, I believe effective teachers are willing to adjust their own natural style to meet the needs of students. Teachers need to be knowledgeable about their subject area and skilled in engaging students. Teachers should understand and include cultural perspectives. They need to treat students with dignity and respect. The focus in every classroom needs to be on developing higher level thinking skills and collaborative problem solving. Teachers need to design lessons that have understandable learning outcomes and communicate expectations clearly for students. In times where the technological age is advancing quickly, teachers need to develop the kinds of skills which students need to learn to be successful in life. Teachers need to work to instill a love for life-long learning. These are the characteristics teachers need for today’s classroom.

OPENING LETTER OF APPLICATION Opening statement clearly states what position you are applying for. Then state what is included in this application. i.e. philosophy, resume, portfolio, etc. Informational paragraph describes something about you that you really want the reader to know. You can include why you are applying. Closing presentation leaves the lasting impression and thanks the person for the consideration of your application. **Letter is well organized. **Thoughts flow easily.

MY EXAMPLE Opening statement: I am writing this letter of application to teach a sessional class this winter semester, I have sent you my resume and have attached my teaching philosophy. I am presently the principal at Henry Janzen School and would need to teach an evening class.

INFORMATIONAL PARAGRAPH I have been in Education for 29 years. I have had experience in the classroom teaching grades 2-8 and spent several years in the role of an arts education teacher. I have embraced the educational changes made in our Division through my years in Regina Public Schools. I have worked with teachers to develop skills and changing philosophies in the provincial curriculum and as directed by our local board. I feel I would bring a wealth of knowledge from my experience to the university students I would be teaching. I am excited about an opportunity to work with our future teachers.
