HISTORY OF TITLE 5 REVISIONS Fall 2009  CCC System Budget Cuts  50,000 FTES reported for P.E. classes in which a student repeated after successful completion.  Use of the term “activity” abused to allow repeats in any discipline which self proclaimed to be “activity.”  Repeats of leveled courses.

HISTORY OF TITLE 5 REVISIONS Spring 2010 – Spring 2011 ASCCC convened focus groups  Santa Monica College – Faculty and CCCPE members  North Curriculum Meeting  South Curriculum Meeting

HISTORY OF TITLE 5 REVISIONS Actions by the ASCCC Spring 2011 Plenary Session  Resolution 9.03 Eliminate repeatability for activity courses (and term “activity” from Title 5). Repeatability Taskforce creates Recommendations Regarding Repeatability Fall 2011 Plenary Session  Resolution 9.07 Amend and Endorse Recommendations Regarding Repeatability document.

HISTORY OF TITLE 5 REVISIONS Actions by SACC to Revise: §55000 – Definitions §55040 – District Policy for Course Repetition §55041 – Repeatable Courses §55043 – Course Repetition Due to Significant Lapse of Time §58161 – Apportionment for Course Enrollment §58162 – Intercollegiate Athletics

HISTORY OF TITLE 5 REVISIONS Actions by BOG BOG July 9, 2012 Action Calendar  BOG approved Title 5 Revisions  Implementation timeline – by Fall 2013

ISSUES RELATED TO TOP CODES?  Physical Education – remove repeatability  CTE Fitness Trainer courses  Athletics – retain repeatability; code off-season conditioning  Adapted P.E. – ensure proper coding. Interpretations?  Dance  Athletic Training  Kinesiology – lecture courses for AAT and other degrees  How many have Kinesiology A.A.T. degrees?  Justify your activity courses!

ISSUES RELATED TO 350 HOUR RULE?  Resolution Change to Title 5§ “175 Hour Rule” for Student- Athletes  How are colleges implementing the 175 hour limitation on conditioning?  Issues?  Best Practices?  CCCAA position?

GUIDELINES FOR FAMILIES Principles for Developing Families of Courses  When leveling courses, Roman Numerals (I, II, III) are best for articulation.  All courses do not have to be in families.  Be cautious of creating families which are too broad.  Ensure there are programmatic justifications for leveling courses.  Do not proliferate families unnecessarily.

GRADING ON ATTENDANCE Title 5 § 55002(a)(2)(A) – “Grades are intended to reflect the student’s performance in terms of course objectives and the students subject matter proficiency as opposed to a disciplinary option.” Title 5 §58004 – “The failure to attend described in section (no shows or excessive unexcused absences) MUST be addressed by dropping the student from the class; a district cannot continue the student in the class and lower the grade for nonattendance.” San Diego City College Faculty Resource How do you handle attendance in your syllabus?
