What the Committee Does: Facilitates and supports the applications of Fellows who are applying for (National) Clinical Excellence Awards, England, Wales & Scotland. Advises members who are seeking to apply for Clinical Excellence Awards Aspires to identify and support nominations of suitable surgical candidates for National Honours
How it does it: The committee membership comprises the Presidents or nominees of the Specialty Associations, ASGBI Pres, RCS(Eng) & RCS (Ed), Lay member & Non-Award Holder. Chairman is a previous President ASGBI Members are invited to submit their applications for support. Committee members assess and rank applications independently according to ACCEA & SACDA criteria Submits to National ACCEA & SACDA. Oversees the writing & submission of citations for supported applicants. Writes citations for the RCSs’ as requested.
Process (1) Deadlines set to dovetail with the Royal Colleges (around August) Circa 100 applications sent to each member of the committee for scoring, using the ACCEA/SACDA marking scheme Marks are totalled and the C.V.s ranked The committee meets and the spreadsheet is reviewed for anomalies, previous successful applications Ranked lists agreed, date of next meeting & deadlines set
Process (2) The permitted numbers are submitted to ACCEA & SACDA together with a citation written by an appropriate colleague, checked and signed off by the chairman Supported candidates notified and where practical, Trust medical directors Lists sent to the Colleges for information Minutes of the meeting recorded.
National Honours... Via the Cabinet Office Applications are submitted by a ‘lead’ nominator, with supporting letters and citations from others Nominations are expected to be kept secret There are several recognised pathways: local support via the County system (Lord Lieutenant), major institutions such as the RSM, Royal Colleges, government bodies, etc.
Summary The ASGBI process is inclusive and open Some further development of the process planned & ASGBI website resources Professor Mike Horrocks will take up the chair in 2011 Fellows intending to apply should study the ACCEA and SACDA websites and maintain their application form ready for submission at short notice
